Trump Announces Formation of New Super Intelligence Force

President Donald Trump has unveiled a new initiative called the Super Intelligence Force, which will be under the leadership of national intelligence director Jay Clayton and other members of his administration. This announcement was shared in a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

According to Trump, the Super Intelligence Force aims to unify federal efforts to ensure that the United States maintains its leadership in the realm of Super Intelligence—a concept he believes is poised to be more transformative than both the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the Internet. He stated that this force will safeguard interests and elevate the quality of life for all Americans.

This development follows an earlier commitment made by Trump in September amidst an ongoing debate regarding AI safety, which he has described as a narrative created by the “Radical Left Dumocrats.” Nevertheless, he expressed intentions to establish an AI Force and appoint a dedicated AI czar, humorously instructing that “only high I.Q. individuals need apply.”

Since that time, Trump also signed an executive order to rebrand artificial intelligence as “super intelligence.” This newly coined term appears to have garnered some acceptance among tech leaders present at a White House event, where they signed a non-binding safety pledge, though the pledge itself was noted for an embarrassing typo.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Clayton will spearhead the Super Intelligence Force, effectively assuming the role of AI/SI czar. He will be supported by vice chairs including Andrew Ferguson, chair of the Federal Trade Commission, Emil Michael, the Undersecretary of War for Research and Engineering, and Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management.

The task force is expected to produce a comprehensive report within 120 days, analyzing the risks and potential benefits associated with AI technology. Clayton has previously emphasized the necessity for the U.S. to remain at the forefront of AI development, particularly in light of advancements made by other nations like China. He reiterated to the *Wall Street Journal* that a significant danger lies in the possibility of the U.S. falling behind.

The charter for the task force indicates its commitment to formulating strategies that address society’s SI-related threats while also preventing excessive regulation that could hinder innovation and competitive dynamics in the tech sector.

Editor’s Take

The formation of the Super Intelligence Force signals a significant shift in how the U.S. government is approaching AI regulation and development. By positioning itself as a leader in this field, the administration may influence both domestic and international AI policies. For businesses and developers, this could mean more opportunities, but also increased scrutiny and potential regulation. As the conversation around AI safety intensifies, how this task force addresses emerging challenges will be crucial for the future of technology in America.
