Meta to Cease Quest 2 OS Updates by 2027

Meta has announced plans to release the final operating system update for its Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets by March 2027. This update, designated as v213, will mark the end of feature development for these devices. Following this update, the company intends to provide security patches and essential bug fixes through the end of 2027. Additionally, developers will have the opportunity to submit applications supporting these headsets until December 2027.

In a shift towards new technology, Meta has declared the Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets as the new standard for Meta VR gamers. This transition comes ahead of the anticipated launch of the company’s new VR Glasses, expected to be available in spring 2027.

“The Quest 2 and Quest Pro have established a strong foundation for our platform, with millions of users still engaged with these devices,” stated Meta. The new models, Quest 3 and Quest 3S, offer enhanced performance capabilities and integrated mixed reality features. Applications developed for these models will be compatible with the upcoming Meta VR Glasses, which will utilize the same operating system and software development kits.
