Google Invests €13bn in Finnish AI and Partners on Nuclear Power Initiative
Google has announced its intent to significantly invest in Finland as part of a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure. The tech giant will purchase up to half of the electricity generated by the Loviisa nuclear power plant through a 22-year agreement with Fortum, a Finnish utility company. This agreement is part of a larger €13 billion (approximately $15 billion) investment, marking Google’s largest single investment in Europe to date.
The funding is set to support the establishment of three new data centers and the expansion of an existing facility. This move highlights Finland’s burgeoning status as a hub for data centers, thanks to its favorable climate, low-carbon energy sources, and well-developed digital infrastructure.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo expressed that Google’s decision underscores Finland’s strengths in building responsible AI infrastructure. He emphasized the anticipated benefits for the nation’s economy, estimating a boost to GDP by €3.6 billion annually, along with the creation of over 37,000 jobs during the construction phase slated for 2027 and 2028.
In addition to Google’s substantial investment, TikTok recently announced its own $1 billion commitment to build a data center in Kouvola. This trend illustrates the increasing allure of Finland for technology firms drawn by the combination of clean energy, efficient power grids, and a skilled workforce.
The construction of new data centers, located in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, along with the expansion of an existing facility in Hamina, will support a variety of Google’s services, including the AI chatbot Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube. Google has also pledged to invest in clean energy initiatives and community programs focused on biodiversity and education.
The collaboration highlights the growing demand for energy in line with the AI boom, driving technology companies to secure robust power supplies. This investment will ensure long-term financial stability for the Loviisa plant, which supplies about 10% of Finland’s electricity, and aids in extending its operational life and increasing its capacity.
Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, stated that this investment reflects the company’s commitment to responsibly expanding its technical infrastructure while also supporting enhanced energy capacity and affordability initiatives.
