Apple Developing Game Controllers for iPhone, Report Reveals

Apple is reportedly venturing into the gaming market with plans to introduce two game controllers tailored for the iPhone, likely under the Beats brand. Esteemed journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg shared this insight, suggesting that Apple’s interest in game controllers has been a topic of speculation for a while now. A recent discovery by MacRumors revealed two references to these controllers within the code of macOS 26.7, labeling them as first-party devices.

Interestingly, although these references were found in macOS rather than iOS, Gurman asserts that the controllers are primarily intended for use with iPhones. He notes that executives from Beats are driving this initiative. Apple frequently leverages its subsidiary brands for exploring new product lines and competing at accessible price points, thereby preserving the premium nature of its main Apple branding.

As Gurman points out, “Beats now offers a variety of iPhone cases and USB-C cables that deviate from Apple’s traditional design philosophy. In this context, a game controller appears to be a logical addition. To appeal to a wide audience, it must be affordably priced, which may preclude the use of some high-end materials typically seen in Apple products. Furthermore, the gaming lifestyle aligns well with the Beats brand ethos.”

Editor’s Take

The introduction of gaming controllers by Apple reflects a strategic move to capture a segment of the gaming market, potentially expanding their user base. By promoting these products under the Beats brand, Apple can maintain its premium image while attracting gamers with budget-friendly options. This could have significant implications for developers and businesses looking to innovate in the gaming space, fostering greater collaboration and competition.
