Waymo Selects Singapore as Next Global Location for Robotaxi Services

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced plans to roll out a robotaxi service in Singapore by 2028, marking a significant step in the company’s international expansion strategy.

The deployment of Waymo’s vehicles in Singapore is expected to begin in the near future, with preparations for mapping and autonomous testing scheduled for 2027. These initial trials will include human safety drivers to ensure compliance and safety protocols. Waymo aims to provide fully autonomous ride-hailing services to the public by 2028.

Before commencing passenger services, Waymo must secure approval from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA). The city-state mandates that all autonomous vehicles undergo rigorous safety assessments at the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research (CETRAN) before being allowed on public roads. These assessments are developed in coordination with local traffic authorities. Notably, Waymo is not new to Singapore; earlier this year, it established a corporate presence and joined Singapore’s Steering Committee on Autonomous Vehicles.

Singapore has become a prominent hub for testing autonomous vehicles, having authorized trials for various applications, including autonomous freight delivery, road-sweepers, and self-driving buses for airport personnel. In 2016, Motional, a US-based company predominantly owned by Hyundai, also conducted a robotaxi pilot in the region.

In addition to its expansion in Singapore, Waymo has set its sights on launching a robotaxi service in London by the end of 2026, followed by launches in Tokyo in 2027 and Munich, Germany later that same year, marking its entry into the European Union.

Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo, commented on Singapore’s transportation ecosystem: “Singapore has built one of the safest, most efficient, and most forward-thinking transportation ecosystems in the world. Their focus on reliability, sustainability, and human-centric progress directly mirrors how we have built Waymo’s technology and service.”

This year, Waymo has announced numerous domestic market expansions, including cities like Nashville, Denver, San Diego, and Las Vegas. The company currently operates approximately 4,000 vehicles across 15 US cities.

Despite its growth, regulatory challenges and opposition from local politicians have hindered Waymo from establishing services in major US cities such as New York City, Chicago, and Washington, DC. As the debate over robotaxi regulations continues in the US, Waymo appears committed to advancing its global presence, showcasing its ambition for growth.

Editor’s Take

This development highlights the rapid evolution of autonomous vehicle technology and its international viability. Waymo’s expansion into Singapore not only demonstrates the company’s confidence in its operational capabilities but also reflects Singapore’s progressive stance on technology and public transportation. For consumers, this means greater accessibility to innovative mobility solutions in the near future, while businesses may observe a shift in urban transportation dynamics.
