Valor, Point72 Invest in General Intuition, Valuing AI Robotics Startup at $6B

General Intuition, a startup based in New York, is reportedly seeking to raise funding that would value the company at an impressive $6 billion before capital injection. The talks involve notable investors such as Valor Equity Partners, Point72 Ventures, and Seven Seven Six, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

In addition to the new backers, existing investors like Khosla Ventures and General Catalyst are participating in this funding round. This comes shortly after General Intuition secured $320 million at a $2.3 billion valuation just weeks prior.

This development aligns with previous reports highlighting the startup’s growing prominence in the domain of physical AI. CEO Pim de Witte, who established the company in October of last year, initially spun it out from his video game clip-sharing platform, Medal. By leveraging hundreds of millions of hours of gameplay data along with action labels—records detailing player interactions—the company is setting a strong foundation for developing generalized AI agents capable of navigating complex environments.

According to investor Vinod Khosla, who shared insights with TechCrunch, these action labels are essential for fostering what he terms the “emergence of intuition.” This concept revolves around a model’s ability to generalize its learning across varied tasks, even those it wasn’t specifically trained to tackle.

The funding round appears to be oversubscribed, reflecting significant interest from the investment community. As General Intuition finalizes the round, the company intends to channel the new capital into enhancing its general model, focusing particularly on robotics. This includes increasing its computing infrastructure—an area where it has a partnership with neolab CoreWeave—as well as expanding its workforce.

Valor Equity Partners is recognized for its support of ventures like SpaceX, and this investment in General Intuition would mark the firm’s first foray into AI labs since its involvement with the aerospace giant.

This story is still developing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.

Editor’s Take

The substantial valuation and active interest from leading investors indicate a strong belief in the potential of General Intuition and its innovative approach to AI. As AI continues to penetrate industries such as robotics, this funding will likely accelerate advancements that can benefit both developers and end-users. The emphasis on generalization in AI models could pave the way for more versatile and intelligent systems across various applications.
