US Tech Stocks Decline Amid Surge in AI Spending Approaching $1 Trillion
Tech stocks experienced a notable decline for the second consecutive day as apprehensions grow over the substantial investments being made in artificial intelligence (AI).
Specifically, shares of Intel saw a dramatic drop of as much as 30% on Friday, following a substantial decline in the value of stocks held by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, which lost over $500 billion (£374 billion) in just one day’s trading.
Other technology companies such as Reddit and Amazon also experienced losses, while the Nasdaq composite index, which tracks major tech enterprises in the US, fell by more than 3.5%.
This downturn has raised important questions, as many tech firms are investing heavily in AI, yet their earnings are not consistently aligning with analysts’ projections, raising fears of a potential AI market bubble.
Leading technology giants, including Meta, Alphabet, Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft, have pledged to invest a staggering $800.6 billion collectively by 2026 in AI-related initiatives.
The decline in Alphabet’s stock market valuation was notably influenced by the announcement that their AI-generated summaries, provided as primary responses to search queries, have been impacting their core search advertising revenue.
Concurrently, Alphabet anticipates spending up to $205 billion this year on investments, primarily directed towards AI development.
Alphabet’s shares continued to struggle in early trading, down another 2.2% following a previous day’s drop of over 12%.
The more significant losses were primarily seen with Intel, which is poised to lose over $130 billion in market value as its share prices continue to decline.
Despite the diminishing demand for computers, which is a significant source of revenue for microprocessor production, Intel has expressed plans to boost its AI investments.
On Thursday, Intel’s finance chief David Zinsner stated that the company does not expect to generate more cash than it expends this year and has predicted revenue figures for the fourth quarter to fall below expectations.
“Looking ahead, we foresee the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year,” he noted during the chip maker’s third-quarter earnings report.
Zinsner also mentioned a substantial increase in investment for equipment during the third quarter, indicating an even greater push in the upcoming months.
Editor’s Take
The significant downturn in tech stock values signals a precarious moment for the industry as heavy investments in AI come under scrutiny. As companies like Intel and Alphabet recalibrate expectations, the repercussions could extend beyond stock prices to influence broader market sentiment towards AI initiatives. For users, developers, and businesses, this volatility may mean a reassessment of AI budgets and strategies moving forward.
