Trump Proposes New Name for AI and Announces Plans for an AI Force
President Donald Trump has entered the heated conversation surrounding AI safety, characterizing concerns as part of a broader set of “hoaxes” propagated by the “Radical Left Dumocrats” aimed at undermining the nation.
On Saturday, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his views on the term “Artificial Intelligence,” suggesting that it might be misleading. He initiated a poll asking followers to propose a new name for AI, offering options like Superior Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence, or Supreme Intelligence. As of the publication date, this poll remains open.
In a subsequent post, Trump asserted that efforts to “decimate or destroy AI” are a continuation of various Democratic hoaxes. He likened these efforts to issues such as the repeated claims of “RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA” and the impeachment proceedings, among others.
Trump expressed his determination not to allow this situation to unfold unchecked, claiming that the so-called hoax began with misguided attacks on data centers. He emphasized that, following the perceived failure of these attacks, critics are now shifting their focus to AI.
While he did not provide evidence supporting his assertion that skepticism towards AI and data centers is not genuine, it is noteworthy that both major political parties have scrutinized these facilities. Recently, New York became the first state to halt permits for significant data center projects, highlighting bipartisan concerns.
The president’s remarks mirror earlier comments made at a golf tournament, where he acknowledged the necessity for “guardrails” in AI governance but cautioned against what he termed negative forces amplifying these debates.
Continuing his discourse, Trump vowed to “cherish” the AI industry and pledged to oversee its growth. He announced plans to establish an AI Force, akin to the Space Force he created during his presidency.
“In the near future, I will be announcing an AI ‘Czar’ — only high-I.Q. individuals need apply!” he declared, although the specific responsibilities of this new role remained undefined. Recently, venture capitalist David Sacks stepped down from his role as Trump’s AI and crypto czar to join the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
The ongoing debate about AI safety has gained momentum following the resignation of an AI researcher from Anthropic, who cited fears that leading AI firms genuinely believe they could pose existential threats. Following this, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei outlined a plan to responsibly advance AI development, which has reportedly received support from prominent figures like Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk of SpaceX. Some critics argue that the discussions about AI’s potential dangers often distract from its immediate impacts.
On another note, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, during an appearance at the All-In Summit, aligned himself with Trump’s view that the backlash against AI is a “hoax,” asserting that they “won’t allow” any slowdown in AI progress.
Editor’s Take
This development highlights a significant intersection of politics and technology, particularly as regulations around AI become more prominent. Trump’s commitment to supporting the AI sector could encourage investment and innovation but also raises concerns about oversight and governance. As users and businesses navigate this evolving landscape, clarity and responsibility in AI development will be critical for societal trust and safety.
