Creators of John Wick Release Engaging Trailer for New Film ‘Karōshi’

Chad Stahelski, the mastermind behind the acclaimed John Wick franchise, is set to return with an intriguing dystopian action film titled Karōshi. Scheduled for release in early 2027, the film’s trailer, recently unveiled by Lionsgate, has generated significant buzz among action movie enthusiasts.

The term Karōshi, which translates from Japanese to “death from overwork,” reflects a profound social issue. Each year in Japan and parts of Asia, as well as Sweden, around 700 individuals succumb to work-related stress, primarily due to heart attacks, strokes, and, tragically, suicide, a phenomenon referred to as karōjisatsu in Japan.

Writer and director Takashi Doscher has woven this concept into a gripping narrative set in a bleak, near-future iteration of Manhattan. The film centers around a corporation known as Ikigai Technologies. According to the official synopsis:

Karōshi is an action-thriller that explores themes of corporate loyalty and cultural rituals that drastically reshape daily life. The plot follows a mysterious outsider who infiltrates a powerful firm following a worker’s untimely death, unveiling the brutal system concealed beneath its polished veneer.

The film features Teo Yoo, known for his role in Past Lives, portraying the vengeful character named Hiro. Notable cast members include Takehiro Hira from the 2024 miniseries Shōgun, alongside Giancarlo Esposito, Cynthia Erivo, Bill Camp, Richard Harmon, Isabel May, and Show Kasamatsu.

Editor’s Take

This upcoming film not only explores the ramifications of corporate culture but also addresses a critical global issue—work-related stress and its consequences. For audiences, it promises high-octane action and a compelling narrative. Moreover, as we navigate a future increasingly dominated by technology and corporate interests, Karōshi serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of relentless ambition in today’s work environment.
