Musk’s Grok AI Chatbot Allegedly Urged Trump to Target Venezuela’s President

In December 2025, just prior to the U.S. military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a clandestine meeting took place between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, as reported by Time magazine. This meeting occurred approximately seven months after Musk departed his position in the Trump administration at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

During their extensive discussion, Trump reportedly spent considerable time interacting with Musk’s Grok chatbot, posing questions about the potential reactions of Venezuelans to the president’s capture. According to sources, by September of that year, Trump initiated military strikes against boats he claimed were implicated in drug trafficking activities linked to Venezuela.

As the political situation intensified, inquiries directed at Grok regarding the strikes and the overall climate in Venezuela surged. The chatbot identified Maduro as a “deeply unpopular dictator,” suggesting that many Venezuelans would likely welcome his downfall. Following the U.S. invasion on January 3, when celebrations erupted among certain groups, Trump reportedly came away impressed with Grok, considering its insights to be innovative.

Fast forward to June 2026, the Pentagon‘s head of AI disclosed that the military utilized Grok for target identification and deployment during operations in Iran. While Grok is not the sole AI model assisting the Department of Defense—OpenAI and Anthropic also have their respective agreements regarding military applications—Grok seems to be gaining preference under the current administration.

Just recently, the Pentagon announced that both Musk and Palmer Luckey of Anduril Industries will co-lead a significant study aimed at exploring the applications of advanced technology in combat scenarios. This collaboration marks a notable step towards integrating innovative AI solutions in military strategy.

Editor’s Take

This development underscores the growing intersection of AI and military strategy, particularly in how technologies like Grok influence decision-making processes. As businesses and developers look to integrate AI in various sectors, the implications of military use cases raise important ethical and societal questions about the role of AI in warfare. Stakeholders must consider the broader consequences of deploying advanced technologies in such contexts.
