Microsoft Unveils New AI PCs Powered by Nvidia Chips and Enhanced Windows 11
Nvidia made waves in June when it announced partnerships with Microsoft and various PC manufacturers to develop advanced AI-ready PCs featuring the new RTX Spark chip. However, detailed specifications for these machines were scarce at that time.
During the Tech Week event in San Francisco on Wednesday, Microsoft unveiled the specifications and pricing for its latest offering, the Surface Laptop Ultra. This device comes in two initial variants: a basic model starting at $2,600 and a more powerful option beginning at $3,700. With additional configurations for memory and storage, the price can escalate to $5,900, although the highest-end version is already sold out.
In addition to the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a new workstation powered by the RTX Spark chip, with a starting price of $6,000. This system is bundled with essential development tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7.
Both the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Dev Box are specifically designed for running AI models locally on the device. They incorporate enhancements such as a powerful CPU, GPU, unified memory, and improved cooling solutions, all necessary to efficiently process AI workloads.
Furthermore, these devices will run a reimagined version of Windows 11, which includes a feature called “Execution Containers.” This feature facilitates the sandboxing of AI agents, a point emphasized by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during the event. He stated, “One of the things we realized in the last 3-4 years is that just having a model doesn’t do much for anything. You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model.” He outlined that Microsoft is creating solutions not just for its applications, but also for third-party developer needs.
Targeting developers specifically, Microsoft is incentivizing upgrades by offering up to $1,000 off for customers who trade in a MacBook Pro, a popular choice among AI enthusiasts, particularly in tech hubs like Silicon Valley.
Despite their developer focus, these powerful Surface PCs are also positioned as capable machines for content creation, video editing, and gaming, promising versatility across various user needs.
Microsoft isn’t alone in this initiative; Dell also announced the details of its XPS 16 Creator Edition PC, featuring the Nvidia RTX Spark chip. The device is currently available for preorder and is expected to be released in October, with a price tag of $3,800.
Editor’s Take
The emergence of AI-ready PCs like the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box highlights a significant shift towards local AI processing capabilities. This development not only empowers developers by providing them the tools necessary to harness AI more effectively but also broadens the appeal of powerful PCs for content creators and gamers. As Microsoft continues to evolve Windows into a platform that supports diverse applications, this could redefine user expectations and capabilities in computing.
