Local Hero Reports RAF Terror Threat After Spotting Suspicious Men, Bomb Squad Investigates Vans

Suspicion of Car Bomb Plot Near RAF Fairford Sparks Major Police Response

A vigilant resident alerted authorities about a potential car bomb threat at RAF Fairford after witnessing several men behaving suspiciously. This quick action led to an extensive police operation that took place on a Sunday morning in Gloucestershire.

In a statement, police confirmed the detention of multiple individuals who are now under investigation for offenses related to the Explosives Act. During the operation, viable incendiary devices and chemicals were discovered in a van parked close to the military base, heightening concerns about a possible attack.

Witnesses described a tense scene as the suspects were apprehended. They were seen shirtless and handcuffed, a sign that law enforcement may have suspected they were equipped with suicide vests.

Local resident Julian Tudsbery, who has lived in the nearby village of Whelford for three decades, revealed that a neighbor had reported three “suspicious vans” to the base’s police, who did not initially respond. Amid growing concern, she dialed emergency services.

“Evidently, they phoned the airbase police, who didn’t answer the phone,” Tudsbery said. “It just rang out so she dialed 999.” He added that he and his family were evacuated from their home early in the morning.

Upon answering the door, Tudsbery found several police officers and three squad cars in his driveway, with orders to evacuate due to a “major incident.”

Several suspects were apprehended near RAF Fairford this morning under the Explosives Act.

Another local, identified only as Jason, said around 40 to 50 residents were evacuated to a nearby leisure center as a precaution. He confirmed that his family also fled, taking their puppy and two cats with them.

As the situation unfolded, aerial footage demonstrated a bomb disposal robot meticulously inspecting the suspicious vans, where large dark objects were visible inside. The military’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team was dispatched to further investigate the scene.

The Gloucestershire Police acknowledged that the Army would assess several vehicles in Whelford but did not confirm details regarding the bomb disposal operation.

Counter-terrorism officers are spearheading the investigation, as reports indicate that a potential assault may have been thwarted.

Residents expressed concerns about security, noting that RAF Fairford has become a focal point for increased military activity and vigilance, especially in light of its use by the U.S. Air Force for operations in the Middle East.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood acknowledged the situation, stating that it was “contained” and commending emergency services for their swift response. “While investigations are ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” she wrote on social media.
