Listen Labs Secures $1.5B in Funding Amid Ongoing Talks with Salesforce

Listen Labs, an innovative market research startup specializing in voice AI for customer interviews, recently made headlines by signing a term sheet for a $125 million Series C funding round, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. Notably, Menlo Ventures was poised to lead this investment, according to sources familiar with the situation.

However, the funding round has since fallen through, a rarity in the venture capital landscape that is generally viewed unfavorably by investors. Listen Labs opted to withdraw from the signed term sheet, indicating potential complications in its funding journey.

The breakdown of this financing appears to be linked to ongoing acquisition discussions with Salesforce. Reports indicate that the customer relationship management powerhouse is considering acquiring Listen Labs for approximately $2 billion. Nevertheless, these negotiations are still in progress and could potentially end without a definitive agreement.

Established just three years ago, Listen Labs stands out in the burgeoning sector of automated customer research powered by AI. With roughly $30 million in annual revenue, the company significantly outpaces its competitor, Simile, which recently completed a $200 million Series B round at a $2 billion valuation. Observers suggest that this development may have set a new valuation benchmark as Listen Labs contemplates its future funding strategies.

Should the discussions with Salesforce falter, sources indicate that Listen Labs is likely to re-enter the market with ambitions to achieve a valuation exceeding $2 billion.

Acquiring Listen Labs could bolster Salesforce’s AI capabilities by leveraging the startup’s technology to better predict customer needs. However, experts warn that the proposed revenue multiple of 67 times might be too high, influencing Salesforce’s ultimate decision.

Requests for comment from Listen Labs, Salesforce, Menlo Ventures, and Simile went unanswered at the time of reporting.

Founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann, a former German national champion in competitive programming, and Alfred Wahlforss, a previous founder of the staffing startup Bemlo, Listen Labs has rapidly developed a cutting-edge AI that crafts survey questions and conducts interviews through audio and video formats. These conversations are then compiled into comprehensive reports and presentations, akin to those produced by traditional market researchers.

Large corporations, including Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen, rely on such research to discern customer preferences and satisfaction. Unlike conventional market research, which can be time-consuming and costly, Listen Labs offers a streamlined approach that enhances efficiency.

While Listen Labs and Simile are at the forefront of AI’s disruption of the customer research industry, they face competition from other startups like Outset, Keplar, and Aaru. Some of these competitors utilize real humans for interviews, while others, such as Aaru and Simile, take a synthetic approach, employing AI to simulate human behavior and predict responses without direct interviews.

Earlier this year, Listen Labs had achieved a valuation of $500 million following a successful $69 million Series B funding round led by Ribbit Capital, with additional backing from prominent investors like Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC.

Editor’s Take

The recent developments surrounding Listen Labs highlight the intense competition and strategic maneuvers in the AI-driven market research sector. While potential acquisition by Salesforce could reshape the landscape, the startup’s ability to rebound and pursue a higher valuation further underscores the dynamic nature of venture funding amidst evolving technology demands.
