Critics Panned Musk’s AI-Generated Film ‘Odyssey’ as ‘Meaningless’ Experience
Elon Musk has unveiled an AI-generated interpretation of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, aiming to create a version that stays true to the essence of Homer. Following his critique of Nolan’s film earlier this year, Musk expressed intentions to develop a historically accurate adaptation using his platform, Grok Imagine.
The first glimpses of this adaptation were rolled out on X, featuring a seven-minute episode produced in collaboration with Wonder Studios, a startup based in London. This initiative comes after Musk openly disapproved of Nolan’s casting decisions, which included Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, leveraging the film as a platform to express his views on diversity and inclusion.
Musk had previously promised a full-length film version of Homer’s epic poem by the year’s end but has opted for a serialized approach instead. The inaugural episode portrays Odysseus in turmoil as he contemplates joining the Greek forces against Troy. It culminates with Odysseus ominously holding a wooden horse figurine after enduring a decade of battle.

According to Xavier Collins, co-founder of Wonder Studios, the first episode was crafted in under two weeks, thanks to a compact creative team that included US director Dev Walker. The production reportedly cost tens of thousands of dollars, a stark contrast to Nolan’s version, which had a budget of $250 million and was shot over 91 days with a large crew, yielding an impressive $1.8 billion at the global box office.
Despite Musk’s critiques, the creative team behind this new take expresses admiration for Nolan’s blockbuster. Collins noted his appreciation for Nolan’s work, stating, “We were not directed to make this version anti-woke. We were given the chance to explore one of the best stories ever told.”
Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian rated the episode just one star, criticizing it for lacking emotional depth. The response has not been entirely favorable, with some viewers expressing discomfort with the episode’s execution. As of now, the episode has amassed 7.3 million views on the Grok Imagine X account.
Looking ahead, Collins mentioned plans to refine future episodes by addressing critiques, particularly regarding historical accuracy and the pacing of the storytelling. “We are going to review all of the feedback to enhance our future installments,” he said, aiming for substantial improvements as the series progresses.
Wonder Studios has also collaborated with Google DeepMind on an AI-generated video for Lewis Capaldi’s song Something in the Heavens.
Editor’s Take
This development signifies a novel intersection of AI and storytelling, showcasing the potential for technology to reshape narratives. Both users and creators may benefit from enhanced accessibility in content production, while businesses may explore collaborative avenues with AI. This growing trend could be a game-changer for the entertainment industry, altering how adaptations are conceptualized and developed.
