Honor Magic 9 Pro Max Features Advanced Camera and Large Battery Capacity

Honor Unveils the Magic 9 Flagship Phones in China

Honor has made a significant addition to its product lineup with the launch of the Magic 9 Pro Max in China today. This new flagship smartphone features a refreshed design, an advanced camera system, and a remarkable battery capacity.

This unveiling marks the first major flagship release from Honor since its collaboration with the well-regarded camera manufacturer Arri, aside from the brief showcase of their Robot Phone. The partnership has borne fruit in the design of the new camera array, which takes inspiration from Arri’s iconic three-lens turret first seen in the 1937 Arriflex 35 film camera, characterized by a distinctive knurled texture surrounding the main lens.

Arri’s influence extends beyond aesthetics; it has also contributed to the technical capabilities of the Magic 9 Pro Max’s camera. The phone allows users to shoot in Arri LogC3 and includes 14 preset Arri Look LUTs, alongside access to a broader array of both official and third-party LUTs. Additionally, it supports the APV 10-bit 4:2:2 codec. The camera specifications comprise a 200-megapixel primary lens with a 1/1.28-inch sensor, a 3.5x telephoto lens sharing the same resolution and featuring a 1/1.4-inch sensor, along with a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens—though this last lens lacks certain capabilities offered in Arri Cinema Mode. For video recording, a high-quality directional microphone aims to enhance audio capture. Notably, a square-format selfie camera mimics features similar to Apple’s Center Stage, allowing for versatile shooting in both landscape and portrait orientations.

Honor claims that the newly designed camera housing is more efficient in terms of space usage, providing ample room for an impressive 8,800mAh battery, which contains up to 40 percent silicon material. The Magic 9 Pro Max is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip. When questioned about the choice of this high-end chipset—especially as the device does not support 8K60 or 4K240 video capabilities—the company emphasized that the focus was on offering a comprehensive and consistent flagship experience rather than pursuing specific benchmark metrics.

The Magic 9 series is now available in China, and while an international rollout is confirmed, specific details regarding its global launch remain under wraps.

Editor’s Take

This launch emphasizes Honor’s commitment to integrating high-quality camera technology into smartphones, which could redefine user experiences for photography and videography on mobile devices. The collaboration with Arri signals a potential shift in how smartphone cameras may be perceived, bridging the gap between professional and consumer devices. For businesses and developers, this innovation opens up new avenues for mobile content creation and digital storytelling.
