British Soldier Blackmailed After Refusing SIM Card Removal Order
British Soldier Court-Martialed After Blackmail Incident Involving Personal Photos
On January 19, a British soldier, identified as Barton-Kennedy, alerted his platoon commander regarding a blackmail attempt. He revealed that an unknown individual had obtained nude photographs from his mobile phone and managed to identify him through social media platforms.
Initially, Barton-Kennedy agreed to pay the blackmailer £100 (approximately $133), but hesitated when the amount increased to £250 ($333). After this escalation, he finally reported the incident to his superior officer.
Subsequently, he faced a court-martial and pleaded guilty during a hearing held on July 30. According to court documents, while he acknowledged the orders he was given, Barton-Kennedy requested that the court take into account his personal circumstances, which he claimed made the situation particularly difficult. He stated that without his phone, he was unable to contact his daughter on her birthday or reach out to his pregnant partner.
In a poignant written statement, he expressed his shock upon receiving the initial blackmail message. “Despite being in a state of shock and uncertainty, I realized that I had a duty to report the compromise without further delay,” he stated.
Barton-Kennedy expressed regret over the situation and highlighted that serving in the British Army had been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. He later appealed his sentence, but this appeal was denied in August 2026.
In response to inquiries, Lt. Col. EP Mackie, a spokesperson for the British Army, emphasized the importance of maintaining security measures that protect military personnel. He stated, “Any breaches of Army security measures that may jeopardize personal safety or operational integrity will be addressed promptly, and those at fault can expect decisive disciplinary action.”
