Trump Introduces ‘Super Intelligence Force’ for AI Policy Oversight
US President Donald Trump has announced the formation of a new task force aimed at artificial intelligence (AI), which will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton. This initiative, dubbed the “Super Intelligence Force,” is designed to ensure that the United States maintains its leadership role in the development of AI technology while also coordinating governmental interaction with various stakeholders, as Trump shared in a post on Sunday.
The establishment of the task force follows Trump’s executive order on 29 September, which rebranded the term AI to “Super Intelligence” after his assertion that the term “artificial” conveys a sense of being “fake.”
In his recent statements, Trump mentioned his plans to create a board dedicated to overseeing AI safety. This initiative comes in light of a “morally binding” agreement signed by top technology executives last week, which underscores the importance of responsible AI development.
The Super Intelligence Force will involve coordination with various groups, including consumers, public interest organizations, religious entities, critical infrastructure providers, and companies specializing in super intelligence technologies. Alongside Clayton, notable figures such as Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research, Engineering Emil Michael, and Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor will also play key roles within the task force.
This task force will report directly to both the President and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. The timing of this announcement is significant, given the increasing demands from industry leaders, including executives from OpenAI and Anthropic, for stricter regulations regarding AI technologies.
In an interview on 4 October, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized that while AI does present risks, its potential benefits warrant some acceptance of these challenges. He believes that public access to this technology should not be hindered.
Trump has previously dismissed calls for enhanced regulation of AI, largely advocating for self-regulation within the industry. The pact signed on 29 September includes endorsements from leaders of major tech firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceX, and Google.
Editor’s Take
The formation of the Super Intelligence Force represents a pivotal moment in the governance of AI technologies. As stakeholders express growing concern over AI safety and ethics, enhanced oversight via this task force may foster a more responsible development landscape. This approach could balance innovation with public safety, influencing how users and businesses interact with AI solutions in the future.
