Using Google AI to Rebuild Lost Sculptor Studios: A New Technological Approach
Recreating Lost Sculptor Studios with Google AI
In a groundbreaking intersection of art and technology, a new exhibition titled Visionaries will open on October 20 at the Petit Palais in Paris. This exhibition, coinciding with Art Basel Paris, pays homage to the often-overlooked contributions of female sculptors from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite facing significant social constraints, these women made remarkable strides in a predominantly male-dominated art world.
The exhibit features monumental plaster portraits by contemporary artist Prune Nourry, who dedicates her work to the legacies of 18 historical female sculptors, including the likes of Camille Claudel and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet. As part of a comprehensive effort to celebrate their stories, Nourry has partnered with Google Arts & Culture to unveil a unique 10-minute documentary, directed by Vincent Lorca. This film provides an intimate look at the lives of these pioneering artists while also addressing the glaring historical absence of their workspaces in art records.
Bringing History to Life with AI
To overcome the challenge of limited historical documentation, the project involved extensive research by three art historians, who meticulously gathered letters, journals, and photographs related to these sculptors. Since few images of their actual studios exist, Lynn Cherny, a creative technologist-in-residence at the Google Arts & Culture Lab, leveraged Google’s generative AI and image editing capabilities. By utilizing these advanced tools, the team was able to recreate the sculptors’ studios—the very places where creativity flourished despite societal barriers.
Employing a custom tool built with Google Gemini, the team converted archival photos into 3D models, allowing viewers to virtually navigate these pivotal artistic spaces. This innovative application of AI not only sheds light on the sculptors’ lives but also emphasizes the potential of technology in preserving and promoting art history.
The collaboration between art and technology exemplifies how AI can play a critical role in enhancing our understanding of historical narratives. Platforms that offer the ability to explore multiple AI tools can significantly streamline such creative projects. Artists and researchers alike can benefit from accessing leading AI models from one workspace, making it easier to bring their visions to life.
As the Visionaries exhibition prepares to debut, it stands as a testament to the untold stories of female artists, while also highlighting the transformative power of technology in the arts.
