Shona Joy, Renowned Fashion Brand, to End Operations After 20 Years

Shona Joy, a notable name in Australian fashion, is set to cease operations after 26 successful years. The brand, known for its elegant formal and bridal wear, was founded by Shona Thatcher in 2000.

In a heartfelt message to her employees, Thatcher revealed her decision was motivated by a desire to focus on her personal life as well as family obligations. The lengthy commute from Byron Bay to Sydney had become unsustainable, prompting her to prioritize family.

Thatcher expressed pride in her journey, reflecting, “There was always going to be a day when I thought, ‘That’s enough now.’ I’ve done extremely well, and I’m proud of what we’ve built over the past 26 years,” during an interview with the Australian Financial Review.

She noted that her decision was not due to the financial challenges facing many women’s fashion brands in Australia, such as Cue and Sass & Bide, but rather a personal choice to step back while still on a high note. “I want to end [the business] on a successful note. I’m proud that I can do that,” she added.

In recent years, Shona Joy achieved remarkable sales of over $12.5 million in 2025, driven mainly by the popularity of its La Lune dress collection. The brand has expanded its reach, with products available in 33 countries, including the United States, through retailers such as David Jones, Bloomingdale’s, and The Iconic.

Despite its success, the label has never established brick-and-mortar locations, opting instead for an online retail model, which will remain available until the end of the year. The closure will impact 33 employees, all of whom will receive their entitlements as the brand winds down operations.

Editor’s Take

This closure marks a significant pivot in the fashion industry, highlighting the challenging balance between personal life and professional aspirations. As entrepreneurship increasingly intersects with family life, it raises important questions about sustainability in fashion. While this news brings a close to a successful brand, it also emphasizes the importance of prioritizing personal well-being over business commitments.
