Shamima Begum, ISIS Recruiter, Arrested in Berlin; Father Thought She Was Dead
The British jihadi bride who is known to have recruited Shamima Begum into ISIS has been apprehended in Syria, following her connections to a terrorist assault in Germany. This revelation comes from reports by The Mail on Sunday.
Sharmeena Begum, currently 27, left her home in east London to travel to Syria as a teenager in December 2014. Authorities tracked her down after German police, investigating a July attack during the Berlin Pride event, discovered that she had exchanged communications with the assailant, Abdul Ballout.
Investigators believe that Ballout sent Sharmeena a video in which he declared his allegiance to ISIS, which she was allegedly meant to pass on to the group’s propaganda leader for dissemination following the attack.
Ballout carried out a horrific act by driving a van into a crowd and subsequently attacking festival-goers with a machete, resulting in one fatality and injuries to 29 others. He was ultimately killed by police after a comprehensive 24-hour search.
The BKA, Germany’s equivalent to the FBI, is thought to have shared Sharmeena’s contact details with a Western intelligence agency, which led to her discovery in Syria.
In a statement to the press, her father, Mohammed Nizam Uddin, expressed his surprise at her arrest, stating, “I thought she had been killed in Syria. I am relieved that she is at least alive.”
Sharmeena is expected to face charges for terrorism in Syria, where President Ahmed al-Sharaa has a history of punishing those associated with ISIS severely. If convicted, she may face execution or harsh imprisonment in the country’s notorious prison system.
Uddin shared his emotional turmoil, saying, “What can I do? Everything is in God’s hands. I won’t be able to see her, and she will not be able to come back here, so it’s the same for me her being alive or dead.”
Following the Berlin Pride attack, German investigators revealed connections between Ballout and the British jihadi scene. Reports indicate that Ballout, who has German-Lebanese roots, is the nephew of Omar Bakri Muhammad, a preacher who founded the banned extremist group Al-Muhajiroun.
Professor Peter Neumann, a security expert at King’s College London, commented on the significance of Sharmeena’s ongoing activity within ISIS and her link to a recent attacker, emphasizing the persistence of such extremist networks.
Sharmeena, radicalized after her mother’s death from cancer in 2013, reportedly played a pivotal role in encouraging her classmates, including Shamima Begum, to join her in Syria in early 2015. While Shamima later renounced her ties to ISIS, Sharmeena has remained steadfast in her beliefs.
Authorities have confirmed that Sharmeena was stripped of her British citizenship several years ago, mirroring Shamima’s status, which frees the UK government from any obligation to assist them.
Sharmeena’s extradition to Germany may present her with a chance to evade the death penalty, should German investigators decide to act on her links to Ballout’s attack prior to her trial in Syria. Despite her correspondence with Ballout, authorities have yet to find evidence implicating her directly in the attack.
With Sharmeena’s capture, all four girls from Bethnal Green Academy who joined ISIS are now accounted for. Reports suggest that Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase are presumed dead in Syria, while Shamima remains in an uncertain situation in the Al-Roj camp, near the Syrian-Iraqi border. She continues her legal battle to return to the UK, arguing that she was trafficked as a minor.
Editor’s Take
This development underscores the persistent risks posed by extremist networks that span across borders. The implications for international security are significant, especially in light of ongoing discussions about accountability and rehabilitation of individuals involved in terrorism. As nations grapple with their past decisions regarding citizenship and the ramifications of radicalization, this case may shape future policies on both security and human rights.
