After additional investigations into child exploitation, the eSafety agency has identified significant shortcomings in Roblox’s security measures. Their tests revealed that adult users could still send connection requests to children, despite safeguards intended to block such interactions. Moreover, children’s profiles, which include account identifiers, avatar images, and interests, were fully visible to all users on the platform, offering no privacy options to mitigate this exposure.
In a particularly troubling finding, the agency noted that several interactions, such as adults commenting on children’s posts, could occur without any parental approval. This activity, occurring in various forums outside of standard game environments, raises substantial alarm regarding the platform’s commitment to child safety.
The Online Safety Act in Australia obliges platforms to prevent unwanted adult contact with minors and mandates that children’s accounts should be automatically set to private. Although Roblox contends that it has complied with the law, the platform has entered into a legally enforceable agreement to implement further improvements within three months.
The forthcoming changes are expected to enhance protections for young users. These include measures to ensure adults cannot reach out to children without appropriate parental consent.
