Reddit Introduces AI to Transform Posts into Podcasts and Short Videos
Reddit Introduces Audio and Video Conversion of Text Posts
Reddit is testing a novel method for users to engage with content by transforming text posts into audio and video formats. This initiative aims to enhance user experience by adapting select posts into videos featuring AI-generated voices that read the main text along with relevant comments. Each video showcases the text being read, with an accompanying notification indicating “Real conversation voiced by AI.”
An illustrative example of this feature can be found in a post from the r/boardgames community, dating back eight years. It includes 101 responses to a request for ideal road trip games for adults. Instead of the typical text format, users can view a three-minute video where AI voices articulate the comments. For those preferring the original format, a toggle is available at the top to switch between “Read” and “Play,” making the video option potentially more accessible for users unfamiliar with forum discussions; however, this could raise issues like mispronunciations or misattributed comments.
This new venture comes on the heels of a statement from Reddit in a shareholder earnings letter, which expressed a vision of “reimagining how users and communities connect, share, and consume content through a modernized video experience.” During an earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman hinted at this initiative, emphasizing a growing trend where users engage with audio versions of Reddit content. He pointed out the popularity of entirely dedicated channels featuring AI voices reading Reddit posts, suggesting that audio formats could be a compelling way to engage users.
Currently, the experiment is live on the web, with plans to roll out on iOS and Android starting Tuesday, as confirmed by spokesperson Rosa Kim. Reddit is selectively choosing which posts will be adapted into videos.
According to Kim, “This is an early, limited experiment to understand whether people find these formats useful and how we can deliver them in a way that feels authentic to Reddit.” The rollout will commence with a select number of existing posts and will gradually encompass a larger array over time.
Update, August 17th: Reddit is currently curating the selection of posts that are converted into videos.
Editor’s Take
This development is significant as it represents a shift in how social media platforms approach content consumption. By incorporating audio and video elements, Reddit is not only offering diverse formats but also enabling users to engage with content in a more accessible way. This might lead to greater user engagement and could influence how businesses approach digital marketing strategies on the platform.
