Pregnant Woman, 35, Found in Burning Van Died from Smoke Inhalation, Inquest Reveals

A tragic incident has unfolded in Prestatyn, North Wales, where Samantha Phythian, a 35-year-old pregnant mother of four, was found deceased inside a burning van. An inquest revealed that her death resulted from inhaling smoke and toxic gases.

The grim discovery occurred on Gas Works Lane on the evening of October 4. While her body was located shortly after the fire, formal identification took five days. In the inquest, which took place at County Hall in Ruthin, Senior Coroner John Gittins presented preliminary findings from a post-mortem examination.

Dr. Brian Rodgers, a pathologist with the Home Office, confirmed that Ms. Phythian died from “inhalation of smoke and fire gases.” It was reported that she had been pronounced dead by a paramedic at 11:30 PM on the night of the incident, with identification later established through DNA testing.

Mr. Gittins indicated that Ms. Phythian had no fixed address at the time of her passing, and the inquest has been temporarily adjourned as a police investigation is ongoing.

In a related development, Thomas Matthew Hammond Bell, a 38-year-old from Rhyl, has been charged with her murder. He appeared via video link in Mold Crown Court on Friday, where prosecutors alleged that Phythian was alive when the van was intentionally set on fire.

Judge Geraint Walters commented on the severity of the allegations, stating that it can be asserted that the victim was alive during the act of ignition. Bell, who wore prison attire during the hearing, only confirmed his name and did not enter a plea; however, his barrister, Simon Killeen, asserted that Bell denies any responsibility for her death.

The court proceedings highlighted an ongoing investigation with forensic examinations still in progress. Bell remains in custody, with a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for January and a provisional trial set for April next year.

A second individual, aged 47, has also been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and drug possession with intent to supply.

North Wales Police confirmed Ms. Phythian’s identity on Friday and acknowledged that the post-mortem examination revealed she was pregnant at the time of her death. The police stated, “The individual who tragically died in the van fire on Gas Works Lane, Prestatyn on October 4 was 35-year-old Samantha Natalie Phythian from Rhyl, known affectionately as Sammi.”

Ms. Phythian’s family expressed their grief, remembering her as a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend. They stated, “Her tragic and untimely death has devastated us, and no family should ever face such loss.” They also requested an end to speculation regarding the incident, emphasizing the distress such rumors cause.

Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley echoed the family’s concerns, urging the public to refrain from making potentially prejudicial comments about the ongoing investigation.

The local community has been left in shock, with Councillor Gerry Frobisher remarking that such incidents are unprecedented in Prestatyn, reassuring residents that the area remains safe.
