Microsoft Reveals Azure Revenue Reached $33.2 Billion

Microsoft has taken an unprecedented step by revealing the exact revenue generated by Azure for the July-September quarter, amounting to a significant $33.2 billion. This marks a remarkable increase of 48% compared to the same period last year. While the tech giant has traditionally only reported percentages or vague revenue milestones, this disclosure allows for a clearer comparison with competitors such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, which regularly disclose their revenue figures.

In a concurrent earnings report, Alphabet revealed that its Google Cloud services generated $30.7 billion in revenue, positioning Azure slightly ahead in total revenue. However, with Google Cloud experiencing nearly double the revenue growth compared to Azure, the speed of growth remains a critical factor. According to calculations from TechCrunch, Google Cloud grew approximately twice as fast as Azure in the same timeframe.

Azure has now become the most significant and fastest-growing segment of Microsoft‘s portfolio, representing around 36% of the company’s total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion. Furthermore, Azure exceeded analysts’ expectations by approximately $850 million, surpassing the anticipated $32.3 billion.

This growth trajectory also exceeded the forecast of 44% to 45% growth rate predicted by Microsoft’s CFO, Amy Hood, during the July earnings call. Azure is now part of the newly structured business segment known as Agents and Infra, which also includes Microsoft 365 cloud services. This segment collectively generated $76.8 billion in revenue, an increase of 25% from the previous year.

With Amazon poised to report its earnings shortly, analysts anticipate that its cloud segment, Amazon Web Services, will also show growth. Historically, AWS has been the leader in the cloud space, and expectations suggest that it will maintain its dominant position for the time being. Nevertheless, with all major players now providing explicit dollar figures for their revenues, the competitive landscape is set to heat up.

Editor’s Take

This revenue disclosure from Microsoft is significant as it brings transparency to Azure’s performance in comparison to competitors, enabling better market analysis. For users and businesses, this clarity could influence decision-making regarding cloud services. The impressive growth rates suggest sustained demand for cloud solutions, ensuring a competitive environment that benefits developers and the AI industry significantly.
