Meta Launches Innovative Camera-Free AI Glasses for Enhanced User Experience
At the Connect 2026 conference held on Wednesday, Meta confirmed the launch of its first pair of camera-free AI glasses, named the Ray-Ban Meta Audio. This initiative addresses growing concerns regarding the misuse of AI eyewear, often criticized as “pervert glasses.” The new model focuses solely on audio capabilities, allowing users to enjoy music and podcasts, make phone calls, translate conversations, and interact with Meta’s AI assistant, Muse.
Developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, these glasses will retail starting at $349.
Despite Meta’s existing range of AI glasses with various functionalities, the audio-only model aims to reshape the company’s image, recovering from reputational setbacks linked to privacy issues surrounding video recording without consent. Prior attempts to resolve these concerns included disabling the camera if the recording indicator was tampered with, but discomfort surrounding the product persisted.
The new audio glasses may resonate more positively with consumers, providing a competitive alternative to products like Apple’s Siri-enabled AirPods. “Once you get used to high-quality audio, it’s just a thing that you want all the time, right?” commented Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, emphasizing the innovative potential of audio-centric eyewear.

Weighing in at just 43 grams, the glasses are designed to be slimmer due to the absence of cameras. They feature adjustable temple tips, interchangeable nose pads, and overextension hinges, with a promised battery life of up to 12 hours on a single charge, extending to 48 hours when used with a charging case.
Available in a total of 23 color and lens combinations, the glasses come in two new styles: a retro “Clubmaster” design and a more traditional “Burbank” shape. As with other offerings from Meta, these can also be customized to include prescription lenses.
The Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses will be available for preorder starting on October 13.
In addition, Meta unveiled the next generation of its AI glasses, labeled Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3). This new lineup will feature a 12 MP camera capable of recording 3K Ultra HD video, a six-microphone array, and an extended battery life of up to nine hours.
The partnership with EssilorLuxottica extends beyond the current models, with plans for a broader variety of styles and colors, alongside a collaboration with singer Lisa, following similar ventures with Kylie Jenner. Meta also announced that the glasses will roll out to additional global markets.
All of Meta’s AI glasses will integrate access to Muse, the latest personal AI assistant from the company. Furthermore, Meta teased significant upcoming features, including support for Dolby Atmos Capture, advanced photo selection options, enhancements for hearing loss, customizable controls, and a feature termed “private processing” that claims to safeguard user data from Meta’s access.
Editor’s Take
The launch of the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses marks a significant pivot for Meta in navigating privacy concerns, offering an alternative that emphasizes user-friendly audio experiences. This could reshape consumer perceptions and expand the market for audio-focused wearable technology. Such innovations represent ongoing competition in the wearable sector, pushing boundaries for user engagement and integration in daily life.
