Meta Enables Video Chats with Muse AI Avatars for US Users

Muse Voice, a new feature allowing users in the U.S. to make calls and conduct video chats with Meta’s consumer AI agent, Muse, is now accessible to all, according to an announcement made by the company on Thursday.

Initially unveiled at Meta’s Connect developer conference in September, this innovative video chat feature employs advanced AI models, including Muse Realtime Avatar and Muse Realtime Voice technology, which collectively enhance the digital avatar’s interaction capabilities.

Unlike other AI competitors, Meta’s Muse features an engaging, animated avatar named Jolly. Users can personalize Jolly, adjusting its appearance to resemble a person, animal, or other creative characters, enriching the interaction as they ask questions or request tasks.

Meta believes that by anthropomorphizing Muse, users can form a deeper emotional connection with their AI agent, an experience designed to be even more immersive through live conversations.

As the Muse avatar engages in dialogue, it employs “subtle expressions and gestures” aligned with the tone of discussions. It’s important to note that while Muse does not “see” users, it is capable of hearing them and responding contextually based on the interaction.

The launch of this feature was confirmed through a blog post and by Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, via his account on X. In a demonstration, Wang humorously interacted with his Muse, which takes the form of a fluffy white dog, suggesting how to mitigate potential misunderstandings in meme posts online.

The inclusion of video call capabilities is especially timely as Meta prepares to roll out a Tamagotchi-like wearable device for Muse by the end of the year. This upcoming device will allow users to interact with their digital avatar on a small screen, enabling them to communicate and delegate tasks seamlessly.

Furthermore, Meta has indicated that real-time voice and video interactions will be supported across mobile, web, and Mac platforms, with aspirations to expand these capabilities to AI Glasses and the forthcoming Muse Charm hardware.

Editor’s Take

This new feature significantly enhances the user experience by personalizing interactions with AI, potentially leading to deeper relationships between users and technology. The integration of real-time conversations not only opens doors for entertainment but may also pave the way for practical applications in various sectors, including customer service and remote work.
