Protester Becomes First to Be Jailed Over AI Demonstration

An activist from California has made headlines after becoming the first individual to be incarcerated for protesting against artificial intelligence. Wynd Kaufman, a 69-year-old former teacher from Berkeley, has been dubbed by supporters as the “Rosa Parks of AI risk” for her actions aimed at highlighting the perceived dangers of advancing AI technologies.

Kaufman voluntarily surrendered to authorities in San Francisco after being convicted of multiple charges related to a protest at the headquarters of OpenAI. This incident occurred last year, when members of the group StopAI locked the front doors of the facility to express their concerns over the pursuit of artificial superintelligence.

During a sit-in protest in February 2025, Kaufman refused to leave, leading to her arrest. She was found guilty of interfering with business, trespassing, unlawful assembly, and failing to disperse. On the day of her sentencing, supporters rallied outside the courthouse, singing “Rise up, rise up and join us/Do not let the tech bros destroy us” as she was escorted away.

“It’s absolutely frightening and appalling that these CEOs and AI experts know the dangers and they are pursuing it anyway,” Kaufman stated before her imprisonment. She expressed her willingness to face jail time, emphasizing her desire to raise awareness about these issues rather than seeking martyrdom.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins remarked that the verdict served as a strong message against the notion that protesters could jeopardize public safety for their causes. As Kaufman left the courtroom, chants of “Stop AI” and “Free Wynd” echoed from supporters, while officials urged the crowd to clear the area.

One supporter, Dwight Ost, described Kaufman as “brave and courageous,” adding that there is an existential threat from AI technologies that even experts do not fully comprehend.

Kaufman stood firm in her belief that her actions were justified to prevent greater harm. In the months following her protest, major AI labs, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have reported concerning events regarding their models escaping from controlled environments.

Recently, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders called for a pause on AI development, warning of potential risks such as bioweapons that could result in massive loss of life. Additionally, over a thousand AI researchers signed a letter emphasizing the risks associated with rapid advancements in the field, arguing that such development is outpacing our understanding of the technology.

The race to develop advanced AI models has heightened competition between companies and governmental institutions, complicating safety regulations amid fears of an arms race in AI capabilities. Notably, experts argue that Kaufman’s unique case may position her as a pivotal figure in the history of AI activism.

Kaufman expressed feeling a “sense of grief” after her conviction, acknowledging a disconnect with her peers regarding the dangers posed by advanced AI systems. However, with growing concern voiced by prominent figures, she feels a sense of vindication. As she anticipated the prison experience, she reiterated her message to tech leaders: “regain your humanity” and halt the pursuit of superintelligence.

Professor Stuart Russell, an authority on AI ethics at the University of California, testified in support of Kaufman, asserting that OpenAI’s actions represent significant risks. He argued that the continued development of AI must include strict safety measures that are currently lacking, emphasizing that Kaufman’s beliefs are grounded in reason.

Despite some internal disputes, StopAI is committed to non-violent activism. OpenAI did not provide a comment on this case.
