Google and Partners Unite to Combat Scams Across the APAC Region
Google’s Collaborative Fight Against APAC Scams
As scams become increasingly sophisticated, global tech giants are stepping up efforts to combat these threats. A recent report from the UN revealed that scam-related losses across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region reached a staggering $114.1 billion USD in 2025, impacting millions and highlighting the urgent need for unified defensive strategies.
Advanced Security Measures Across Platforms
Google is at the forefront of this fight, implementing built-in protections across its devices and services. One of the key innovations introduced this year is the Fake Call Detection feature on Android, designed to detect AI-driven phone impersonation attempts. This technology, based on open RCS protocols, enables other platforms to adopt similar protections, significantly enhancing user security.
Moreover, Google is expanding its scam detection capabilities on devices like the Pixel, which already alerts users to potential scams across various messaging applications. This fall, these protections will be extended to more Android users, bolstering defenses against malicious apps that operate outside the Google Play Store.
Collaborative Efforts with Industry Peers
To effectively combat organized scams, Google recognizes the necessity for industry-wide collaboration. Earlier this year, Google joined various industry leaders to sign the Industry Accord Against Online Scams and Fraud, which focuses on sharing threat intelligence and coordinating responses. Recently, the company contributed to establishing the Japan Anti-Scam Alliance (JASA), a consortium to enhance public and private sector defenses against these threats.
Community Empowerment Initiatives
Recognizing the importance of grassroots efforts, Google.org has earmarked $6 million in funding for organizations like The Asia Foundation and the Tech for Good Institute. These initiatives aim to equip small businesses and individuals throughout APAC with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves against scams. Efforts will include training to build community resilience and incubating AI-powered solutions to combat fraud.
Existing partnerships aimed at local empowerment further amplify these efforts. Initiatives such as the Bamboo Builders in Singapore and the Taiwan FactCheck Center provide hyper-local training, while the Scam Ready ASEAN initiative is already delivering scam prevention resources to millions.
Looking Ahead
As Google continues to advocate for a collaborative approach to online safety, the battle against organized fraud strengthens through community collaboration, advanced technologies, and the sharing of critical information. In this regard, tools that allow organizations to explore multiple AI tools in one place can further enhance protective measures, as businesses can actively assess and respond to evolving scams in real-time.
Google’s multi-faceted approach not only highlights the company’s proactive stance against fraud in the APAC region but also serves as a template for collaborative strategies worldwide.
