Funeral for Newborn Girl Allegedly Stabbed by Mother and Boyfriend’s Family

On October 26, mourners convened for the tragic funeral of a newborn girl, Maria Skopova, who was reportedly murdered by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend’s family. Maria, found dead on the day of her birth, August 30, suffered 15 stab wounds.

Authorities noted that her injuries originated from multiple stabbings, leading to the arrest of her mother, Andrea Skopova, her boyfriend, Peter Horvath Jnr, and his parents, Peter Horvath Snr and Nina Horvathova, all facing murder charges.

The accused, all of Slovakian nationality, appeared in court earlier this month and are currently in custody. They are scheduled to enter pleas on December 14, with a provisional trial set for April of next year.

Nearly two months after the tragedy, a funeral service was held at St Marie’s Catholic Cathedral in Sheffield, drawing about 50 attendees, with proceedings conducted primarily in Slovakian. A separate private family ceremony followed in a different location.

A heartfelt card placed beside Maria’s casket read: “For Baby Maria. The purest souls never stay too long in this world. With love from a mum x.”

Mourners at Maria Skopova's funeral

Mourners gathered in Sheffield for Maria Skopova’s funeral.

During the service, Reverend Chris Posluszny stated that Maria’s mother sought to attend the ceremony via YouTube from prison. The reverend emphasized the child’s worth and expressed hopes for her eternal peace.

Law enforcement revealed that Maria’s body was discovered covered in a towel within a blue bag located in a shed in Sheffield. Along with murder charges, the defendants face accusations related to the child’s death and efforts to obstruct justice by cleaning the scene.

A 15-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also faces similar charges regarding obstruction of justice. Court proceedings clarified that Andrea Skopova is the mother, while the identity of Maria’s father remains undisclosed. Although Peter Horvath Jnr is Andrea’s partner, he is not considered the father of the newborn.

The trial is anticipated to commence in April 2027.
