Former News Anchor Arrested in ICE Operation for Overstaying Visa in California

Catherine Stefani, a California state legislator known for her vocal opposition to the Trump administration’s deportation policies, is facing a complex situation with one of her staff members. Ho-Yin Mo, a Hong Kong native and a field representative for Stefani, was arrested during an operation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas last Thursday.

Mo’s arrest was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security, which stated that he was taken into custody as an undocumented individual from Hong Kong during a targeted enforcement operation.

According to Homeland Security, Mo initially entered the United States legally in January 2020 but subsequently overstayed his visa, as he failed to leave by May 15, 2020. The agency clarified that merely having a work authorization or a pending application does not grant legal status.

Before his political career, Mo worked as a news anchor and reporter for KTSF Channel 26, a Chinese-language television station in San Francisco. He also participated in London Breed‘s unsuccessful campaign for re-election as mayor in 2024, serving as an outreach organizer for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Stefani, who represents parts of San Francisco and San Mateo County, hired Mo in January 2025, attracted by his public profile and engagement within the community. A spokesperson for Breed highlighted Mo’s popularity and his critical role in connecting with constituents.

Stefani has been an outspoken critic of ICE actions, labeling such operations as an abuse of power that instills fear within the community. In a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle last October, she described the agency’s approach as an attempt to exert control over vulnerable populations.

A source indicated that Mo is currently held at the Nevada Southern Detention Center in Pahrump, awaiting the outcome of his removal proceedings. Stefani publicly called for his release, emphasizing Mo’s value as a dedicated public servant in the legislature.

She expressed that Mo brings a vital connection to their Chinese-American constituents and has actively aided many individuals in accessing essential services like healthcare and food support. Her remarks underscored Mo’s significant contributions to the community.

Meanwhile, a district director for Stefani indicated that they are exploring legal avenues for Mo, but advised that it may not be in Mo’s best interest to speak publicly at this time.

The current administration’s stance on immigration is markedly stringent, as indicated by the Department of Homeland Security, which asserted a commitment to enforcing removal processes for those in the country illegally.

Editor’s Take

This situation highlights the contentious intersection of immigration policy and community engagement. It raises questions about the implications for public servants in similar circumstances and the broader debate on immigration enforcement. For users and advocates, the outcome could shift the discussion on public service roles for undocumented individuals, underscoring the need for policy reform in a changing political landscape.
