Disney to Employ Most of Character.AI’s Workforce in Strategic Move

Following the recent bankruptcy filing of the chatbot startup Character.AI, many of its employees are set to receive job offers from Disney.

The transition aligns with the appointment of Karandeep Anand, the former CEO of Character.AI, as Disney’s inaugural Chief Technology Officer. As part of the arrangement, Disney is looking to acquire several of Character.AI’s assets for $20 million.

New disclosures from a legal document, highlighted by Bloomberg, reveal that Disney plans to extend job offers to at least 60 former Character.AI employees—representing a significant portion of the company’s workforce—with total estimated annual compensation of around $60 million.

The report indicates that a considerable majority of those offered positions at Disney have chosen to accept them. However, this arrangement is referred to as a “stalking horse bid,” meaning another entity has the option to present a competing offer.

Despite boasting a substantial and engaged user base, Character.AI faces challenges due to excessive operational costs, along with potential legal issues and regulatory scrutiny. Notably, the company has been embroiled in a lawsuit filed by the mother of a 14-year-old who tragically committed suicide after developing an obsession with one of its chatbots. Character.AI is also under investigation by government entities over concerns related to child safety.

Editor’s Take

The acquisition of Character.AI employees by Disney highlights the ongoing integration of AI technology within traditional entertainment companies. This transition not only provides a safety net for displaced workers but also strengthens Disney’s capabilities in the AI sector. For users, this could lead to more innovative AI applications in entertainment, reflecting a shift towards responsible AI development.
