Apple Uncertain on Release Timeline for Additional Foldable iPhones

Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, has announced efforts to expand the accessibility of the company’s latest foldable smartphone, after the lavishly priced $1,999 iPhone Duo rapidly sold out following its launch a week ago.

Ternus expressed enthusiasm regarding the initial consumer response to the iPhone Duo, which retails for £1,999 in the UK. However, reports have emerged of some users experiencing screen cracking issues.

Despite the demand for the foldable device, Sabhi Kahn, Apple’s newly appointed Chief Operating Officer, has indicated uncertainty regarding when additional units will be available. “It’s really hard to predict when supply and demand will be in balance,” Kahn stated during a recent financial analysts’ call.

Although there were no mentions of specific issues during the call, Apple acknowledged last week it would replace any affected devices linked to a problem that led to a “small number” of phones cracking at the fold.

In what has been a strong year for Apple, the company reported record global iPhone sales. For the three months ending September 26, which did not include sales from the iPhone Duo launched later in October, iPhone revenue increased by 17% to $57 billion.

Overall sales for Apple rose by 15% year-over-year, reaching $479 billion. However, sales for both the iPad and wearable products, including headphones and the Apple Watch, saw declines of 10% and 7%, respectively.

Kahn highlighted that many of Apple’s devices continue to face supply constraints, particularly due to difficulties in sourcing sufficient microprocessors with “advanced nodes.” This issue, largely attributed to the demand for artificial intelligence driven technologies, is expected to persist into next year and could notably impact the availability of iPads and Macs.

Additionally, Ternus pointed out that the company is experiencing “unprecedented” cost increases for memory, which is essential for data storage in Apple devices. As demand for data center capacity surged due to the popularity of AI platforms like those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic, storage costs for tech firms like Apple have also risen.

Earlier this year, Tim Cook described the sudden spike in data center costs as a “thousand year flood,” which has consequently led to a 20% price increase across most of Apple’s product line.

Sunil Krishnan from Aviva Investors assessed Apple’s latest results as “reasonably solid” with commendable performance within the iPhone sector. Despite concerns related to profit margins and memory chip costs, he noted that maintaining margins exceeding 45% is commendable for a company of Apple’s stature.

Editor’s Take

This development underscores the growing demand for innovative smartphone technologies, particularly in an era defined by consumer interest in foldable devices. As Apple navigates its supply challenges, the ongoing balance of quality and availability will be crucial for maintaining customer trust and satisfaction. The implications extend beyond just consumer devices, potentially influencing trends and competition in the AI space.
