Anti-Migrant Activist Danny Tommo on Trial for Filming at Dover Port’s Restricted Zone

Daniel Thomas, a well-known anti-migrant activist, is scheduled to appear in court for trial next year following his controversial actions at the Dover port. Reports indicate that he entered a restricted zone, where he filmed and shouted at boats arriving from across the English Channel.

During a recent video-link court session from HMP Winchester, the 37-year-old, who is also known by the name Danny Tommo, pleaded not guilty to several charges. These include unauthorized entry into the restricted area at Western Jet Foil, a temporary holding facility for migrants, on March 31.

In addition to this charge, Thomas faces five further allegations, including using threatening language to distress individuals on April 1, as well as other related offenses on April 6 involving trespassing at Dover Western Docks and the Dunkirk Jetty, where he purportedly filmed and shouted at incoming vessels.

Initially, Thomas had pleaded guilty to entering the restricted area but later vacated this plea after it emerged that he may have received improper advice from his legal counsel at the time.

Thomas is also contesting charges of remaining in Dover Docks without lawful reason on April 1 and April 6, according to court filings. He remains in custody and is slated to return to Westminster Magistrates’ Court for a review hearing on November 18.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring commented on Thomas’s not guilty plea, indicating that a trial is necessary. The trial is set to begin from June 1 to June 3 of next year, with another case management hearing to be held soon.

This legal situation follows Thomas’s earlier denial of bail in September after he pleaded not guilty to allegations of criminal damage, which include using a knife to vandalize a migrant dinghy. He is additionally charged with failing to disclose the personal identification number for his mobile phone to police.

Thomas, who has been identified as a father of four and is expecting his fifth child, displayed emotion during the proceedings. A previous hearing at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court revealed a troubling incident where he allegedly slashed a dinghy while it was at risk of deflation, with a crew member still aboard. Prosecutor Kevin Lucie provided details of this event, noting that Thomas had instructed his own boat to approach the drifting vessel while also making inflammatory remarks about migrants.

The situation unfolded as reports highlighted a boat attempting to transport 51 migrants across the Channel, which was later rescued by the coast guard after enduring nearly 38 hours at sea.

Editor’s Take

This case underscores the growing tensions surrounding migration issues in the UK and raises questions about the legal repercussions for individuals engaged in anti-migrant activism. As more cases emerge, it could significantly influence public opinion and policies regarding migration practices and border security.
