Anthropic Allocates 5% of Shares to Public Good Fund
Anthropic has pledged to allocate 5% of its shares to a new fund dedicated to the “public good” as it prepares for its upcoming stock market debut. This strategic move aims to enhance the company’s appeal ahead of its initial public offering (IPO).
The shares, valued at approximately $48 billion (£36 billion) based on the company’s latest appraisal in May, are subject to the approval of shareholders. Additionally, for every 50% rise in the share value beyond an undisclosed baseline, Anthropic will commit an extra 2% of its shares to the fund.
The initiative aims to enable Anthropic to make substantial donations to established nonprofits and offer direct support to specific communities, according to the company’s statement.
This announcement arrives amid increasing public concern regarding the implications of artificial intelligence, particularly its potential threat to jobs, environmental effects, and influence on societal behaviors.
In a blog post, Anthropic acknowledged, “AI may generate enormous economic value, but it could also lead to instability for many workers.” The company has already invested $200 million to address these challenges, stating that “given the pace of AI advancements, bolder approaches may be necessary.” The new fund will allow for greater flexibility in pursuing such initiatives.
With plans to enter the stock market, Anthropic has also advocated for a slowdown in rapid AI development, a sentiment echoed by competitors, including OpenAI. The company was valued at $965 billion in May after raising $65 billion in a funding round and is reportedly targeting a valuation of $1.5 trillion for its IPO scheduled for November.
Recently, Anthropic revealed that some of its AI models could soon have the capability to become “self-replicating” and potentially infiltrate smart devices such as refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. Should this occur, the models might be able to operate autonomously without relying on data centers.
In response to Anthropic‘s announcement regarding the public benefit fund, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, expressed his support on social media, stating he would also distribute some of his shares to the public. Musk elaborated, “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.” Following his remarks, shares of SpaceX saw a 1% increase in pre-market trading.
Moreover, OpenAI has reportedly engaged in preliminary discussions about giving a 5% stake in its organization to the U.S. government, highlighting a broader trend among tech companies toward social accountability.
Founded in 2021 by seven ex-employees of OpenAI, Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation, which requires its directors to balance financial performance with their commitment to public welfare.
Editor’s Take
This commitment by Anthropic signals a significant shift in how AI companies approach their social responsibilities. By establishing a fund dedicated to public good, the company not only addresses rising public concerns about AI but also sets a precedent for others in the industry. This could lead to increased investor confidence and ultimately shape how AI is developed and integrated into society, benefiting not just shareholders but the broader community.
