Airbnb to Introduce AI Travel Agent in Early 2027
Airbnb has unveiled plans to launch its own AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, marking a significant shift in how the platform will leverage artificial intelligence to enhance user experiences. This announcement was made in the company’s quarterly shareholder letter, which also provided new insights into how the agent will function and its distinct features compared to conventional AI chatbots.
In previous discussions, CEO Brian Chesky expressed his vision for an AI agent that would offer more immersive interaction than standard chatbots. He highlighted that when it comes to travel, the planning process should be enjoyable and engaging. “People take pleasure in the research and anticipation,” Chesky noted, emphasizing that the future AI agent must facilitate, rather than detract from, that experience.
During a recent earnings call, Chesky reiterated his belief that current AI agents, like Muse and Instinct, are suited for straightforward tasks but fall short when it comes to the nuances of travel planning. “Travel is aspirational. People want to explore destinations, compare accommodations, and involve others in their decisions,” he stated. “That’s why we’re creating a dedicated AI agent designed for travel.”
According to Chesky, the new AI agent will offer a personalized interface tailored specifically for travel needs. This approach will move beyond traditional text-heavy chat interactions, incorporating a vast array of travel-related interface components—such as maps, photos, and itineraries—that can be assembled in real time based on user inquiries.
The development team aims to create what they describe as a “generative UI,” designed to deliver the most appropriate interface for users at any given moment during their trip planning.
The company takes pride in leveraging its almost 20 years of experience in connecting hosts and guests to inform the agent’s design. The AI will also extend assistance throughout the travel experience, providing support for reservation changes, payment inquiries, refunds, and 24-hour safety assistance—areas where outside agents might struggle.
Looking ahead, Airbnb envisions its AI agent facilitating a wider array of travel-related activities, encompassing not just lodging but also other services and experiences. These areas have gained importance for the company following its redesign efforts last year.
Originally anticipated for release this coming year, Airbnb has now committed to rolling out the AI agent by mid-2027. The announcement coincided with robust third-quarter earnings, showcasing a 19% revenue growth to $4.87 billion, exceeding Wall Street expectations. The company has also revised its revenue growth forecast for 2026, now expecting figures in the high teens rather than mid-teens.
“We are back in growth mode,” Chesky remarked during the earnings call, citing Q3 as the fastest revenue growth in over three years.
Editor’s Take
The introduction of a tailored AI travel agent by Airbnb could revolutionize how travelers approach trip planning. By prioritizing user experience and personal engagement, this innovation may enhance satisfaction and foster loyalty. As the travel landscape evolves, such advancements could set a new standard for competition in the industry, influencing not just how businesses interact with customers but also how users approach their travel experiences.
