Evaluating AI’s Impact on Heating Costs: Two Years of Testing Results

Can Artificial Intelligence and Smart Thermostats Cut Heating Costs? The question of whether smart thermostats equipped with AI can significantly lower heating expenses is frequently endorsed by manufacturers, with average savings touted around 25% or approximately £180 annually. However, these claims are often accompanied by complex caveats. With fluctuating energy prices, it can be challenging to ascertain the actual impact of these technologies on bills.

To investigate the potential benefits of AI-driven heating systems, I dedicated two years to observing my own conventional heating methods against an AI-enhanced system. The results were unexpected.

My testing ground was a solid-brick home from the 1930s, which recently had an insulated loft conversion.

Initial Setup

During the winter of 2024, my heating configuration included a decade-old combination gas boiler from Worcester Bosch, set to medium heat. I employed a central Hive thermostat, although its smart features were turned off, alongside 13 standard radiators equipped with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs).

To maximize energy efficiency, I formulated a basic heating schedule to activate the system for a few hours in both the morning and evening. I switched off TRVs in unused areas and manually adjusted those in occupied rooms. Additionally, I turned off the heating when leaving the house.

This approach, while effective in keeping costs down, proved cumbersome. Family members often expressed discomfort, and my efforts to maintain a low heating bill sometimes resulted in social tension. Nevertheless, my meticulous management led to lower bills throughout the winter.

After comparing hot water consumption against average summer recordings, my manual control used 14,316.7 kilowatt-hours of gas over a span of 213 days, resulting in a 10 to 15% decrease compared to previous winters.

Adopting AI Technology

In the summer of 2025, I upgraded to a complete Tado X system, linked to my existing boiler. This installation included smart TRVs for each radiator, a wireless thermostat in the two largest rooms, and a programmer wired directly to the boiler.

The advanced system enabled room-by-room management of heating, allowing individual temperature control. Each smart TRV communicated with the boiler to optimize heating without wasting energy in unused spaces.

The system, however, came at a considerable price of approximately £930, with DIY installation feasible, except for the connection to the boiler. Professional installation work would incur labor costs averaging around £80. The setup came with standard alerts and required a £3.99/month subscription for enhanced AI features.

Leveraging anonymized data from over a million homes, the AI learns how quickly rooms heat and cool, optimizing energy usage effectively. Features like automatic hydronic balancing and window detection enhanced overall efficiency, while the subscription also provided a detailed energy analysis over 13 months.

While Tado dominates the smart heating market in Europe, other alternatives offering similar features include Hive, Drayton, and Honeywell. It’s noteworthy that Google’s Nest, known for its smart learning thermostats, exited the European market in 2025.

Comparative Results

I managed a heating schedule for multiple rooms during the winter of 2025–2026 while utilizing all AI capabilities, recording monthly energy usage.

Initially, the system flagged excessive energy use from heating an uninsulated porch, prompting me to adjust settings. After this, the AI system ran autonomously. I initially worried that my comfort level would drive energy consumption up, but I consciously refrained from adjusting controls during the study.

Ultimately, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the AI-managed system used 18% less gas compared to the prior winter. Across the same 213 days, the AI-controlled system consumed just 11,735.7 kWh, which translated into a savings of £205.70.

The Broader Impact of AI in Heating

My findings confirm that AI can effectively reduce heating costs. An 18% reduction is impressive, particularly when considering that users who are less frugal or have unpredictable heating needs could see even greater savings.

The advantages of this technology extend beyond cost savings. The ability to manage temperatures for individual rooms enhances comfort levels significantly. For instance, enjoying a warm living area in the evening without needing to heat up the bedroom or preparing a bathroom for a shower can streamline daily routines.

Furthermore, the temperature sensors also monitor humidity, helping assess when to activate dehumidifiers or ventilate areas for improved air quality. This technology not only facilitates better heating management but also alleviates the stress associated with household climate control.

Editor’s Take

The rise of AI in smart heating systems marks a pivotal evolution for consumers aiming to manage energy costs effectively. As energy prices remain unpredictable, innovations like the Tado system show significant promise not just for savings but also for enhancing user comfort and convenience. This development underscores the potential for AI applications in daily life, paving the way for smarter, more eco-conscious homes.
