Putin Praises Elon Musk as a ‘Real Genius’ Following SpaceX Discussions
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a “real genius” during the recent Russia-Africa Summit held in Moscow. This statement highlights the close dialogue between the two regarding satellite technology.
Speaking at the summit, Putin elaborated on Russia’s satellite internet initiative, Rassvet, aimed at providing internet connectivity via satellites. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with Musk to ensure that Rassvet and Starlink, the satellite internet service from Musk’s company SpaceX, operate harmoniously in orbit. “We are in close contact with our American partners, including Mr. Musk,” he stated, according to translations reported by the BBC.
Putin acknowledged that this cooperation was beneficial amid ongoing political tensions, stating, “We and our American partners value this mutually, and despite all the political questions, we are working hard.” The mention of Starlink is significant, as SpaceX has deployed approximately 13,000 satellites, whereas Rassvet currently has only a few dozen in orbit.
Interestingly, the Russian Embassy in South Africa described Rassvet as “Russia’s Starlink alternative,” indicating the country’s intent to establish a greater presence in satellite communications.
Putin’s remarks came at a time of shifting dynamics, as the relations between the US and Russia appear to be warming, despite the ongoing consequences of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine nearly five years ago. Ukraine has relied heavily on Starlink’s services in its defense strategy against Russian forces. However, there were recent reports of connectivity issues with Starlink, an outcome Musk has publicly acknowledged was intentional.
Amidst these developments, former US President Donald Trump recently commented on an agreement to import diesel from Russia to alleviate gas prices spiking due to global conflicts, including tensions with Iran. This led to Trump waiving certain sanctions against Russia as part of broader negotiations.
In a notable personal background, Musk, who was born in South Africa, later moved to Canada before establishing himself in the United States, where his ventures, including Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink, primarily operate. His influence also extends into political funding, supporting various Republican politicians and aligning with Trump’s agenda.
Editor’s Take
This development underscores a significant, albeit unusual, collaboration in the tech space between Russia and the United States, particularly in satellite technology. As global political landscapes shift, the partnership between Rassvet and Starlink could enhance internet access in previously underserved areas. For users and businesses, this could mean improved connectivity options, while developers may find new opportunities for innovations in satellite technology.
