Anthropic Commits 5% of Shares to Public Benefit Fund for Social Impact

Anthropic, a leading company in the artificial intelligence sector, has announced its intention to allocate 5% of its shares to a new fund aimed at promoting the “public good.” This move is part of Anthropic’s preparations for a potential significant stock market debut, which could see the company’s valuation exceed $1 trillion (£750 billion).

As the AI industry faces increasing scrutiny over safety and social implications, Anthropic’s IPO filing emphasized the potential “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity” posed by AI technologies. In response to these concerns, the company plans for the fund to support nonprofit organizations and initiatives focused on mitigating AI’s effects on the job market.

According to Anthropic, none of the shares controlled by the fund will be utilized for lobbying or political donations, either within the United States or internationally. Additionally, the firm indicated that its Public Benefit Fund may also receive an extra 2% of shares at the discretion of the board.

Responding to this announcement, technology entrepreneur Elon Musk took to social media, suggesting that the shares should be given directly to the public, indicating, “This is what I will be doing.”

Just last week, Anthropic revealed to potential investors that its revenue climbed by 45%, reaching $16.8 billion (£12.6 billion) for the third quarter ending in September. The company, in line with other players in the AI field, aims to position itself as a profitable venture, even as it invests heavily in upgrading technology and infrastructure.

Globally, numerous technology companies have implemented job cuts while pivoting towards AI, citing increased efficiency from these innovations. Research from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), published in 2024, estimated that nearly 40% of global jobs could be impacted by AI, with projections as high as 60% in more advanced economies.

Editor’s Take

The decision by Anthropic to establish a fund for public benefit signifies a growing awareness within the tech industry of its societal responsibilities. By addressing potential harms and supporting those affected by AI, the company is taking proactive steps that could set a valuable precedent for others. This move may also enhance public trust, which is crucial for the continued acceptance and integration of AI technologies in everyday life.
