US to Livestream Upcoming Execution by Firing Squad for Transparency

The execution of Nidal Hasan, the convicted perpetrator of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, is set to be livestreamed, according to unnamed sources from the Defense Department who spoke to major news outlets including the BBC and Associated Press. Hasan, a former US Army major, was found guilty of the attack that resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals at the Texas military base. His execution is scheduled for December 3rd at 2 PM ET and will occur by firing squad.

Following the announcement, The Verge reached out to several major streaming platforms, including YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Meta, Rumble, and Kick, to inquire whether they would permit the broadcast of the execution. However, no comments were received from any of these companies prior to publication.

In an interview with Real America’s Voice, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the importance of public visibility in such matters. “We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there are serious consequences for these types of actions,” he stated.

Editor’s Take

This decision to livestream an execution signifies a notable shift in how the justice system engages with the public. It could spark discussions surrounding the morality and ethics of such broadcasts, impacting societal perceptions of capital punishment. Additionally, the reactions from streaming platforms will shed light on their policies regarding sensitive content, which could have implications for future broadcasts of a similar nature.
