Four Teens Charged with Murder in Shooting Death of Sleeping Four-Year-Old
Tragic Shooting in Charlotte: Four Teenagers Arrested for Murder of Young Boy
In a heart-wrenching incident, four teenagers have been apprehended in connection with the murder of a four-year-old boy who was fatally shot while asleep in his home. The shocking event unfolded on September 20 at approximately 3 AM in Charlotte, North Carolina. Seven armed individuals exited two stolen vehicles and unleashed a barrage of 84 bullets into multiple residences on a quiet street.
The young victim, Caleb Flax, was struck in the head and rushed to a medical facility, but tragically succumbed to his injuries four hours later. An adult woman, identified as Kaley Collins, sustained critical injuries but survived the incident. Thankfully, although nine adults and five children were present in the homes during the shooting, none others were harmed.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) announced on Thursday that they have charged four teenagers with serious offenses including murder, conspiracy, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Additionally, a 22-year-old man, Terrance Jackson, was arrested as an accessory after the fact for allegedly assisting the shooters in disposing of one of the vehicles used in the crime.
Those in custody include Ar’montae Johnson, 16, Jaylen Barber, 16, Antonio Ladson, 17, and Ian Garland, 17. Due to the severe nature of the charges, the juvenile suspects are being tried as adults.
“Caleb should have been safe in his own bed. Instead, his life was ended in an act of unthinkable violence,” stated CMPD Chief of Police Estella D. Patterson during a press conference.
Investigation and Arrests
The investigation unfolded rapidly after the incident. On the morning following the shooting, police discovered one of the stolen vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz, which contained a handgun magazine. They obtained permission from the car’s registered owner to search it, leading to significant evidence that pointed to the suspects.
Through extensive analysis, police were able to utilize GPS data from the vehicle, revealing it had been present at the shooting location on the night of the tragedy. Additionally, an iPhone linked to one of the suspects, Ar’montae Johnson, was connected to the stolen Mercedes days before the shooting.
On September 23, Johnson was detained and reportedly shared information about attending an Airbnb party where certain attendees expressed a desire to retaliate against a previous shooting. He allegedly provided access to the stolen vehicle, fully aware that it would be used for the crime.
Subsequent arrests included Ladson on September 25, who was found in possession of a firearm matching the bullets found at the shooting scene. Johnson’s communications with Barber on the night of the incident further implicated both, leading to Barber’s arrest on September 29, where he confessed to leaving the party armed and participating in the shooting.
The final suspect, Garland, was apprehended on September 30, with all teens’ statements corroborated by surveillance footage.
Jackson, the adult charged as an accessory, allegedly assisted Johnson in reprogramming keys for one of the stolen vehicles and facilitated the sale of the Infiniti used in the incident.
As the investigation remains active, officials urge anyone with pertinent information to come forward. The police have stated their commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their loved ones.
