ChatGPT Introduces Virtual Try-On Feature for Clothing

OpenAI has taken another step toward enhancing the online shopping experience with its conversational AI assistant, ChatGPT. The company recently unveiled two innovative shopping features aimed at helping users navigate the complexities of online retail.

Launched globally, these features include a virtual try-on capability and a new favorites function. The timing of these updates aligns with a broader trend in which AI assistants are increasingly being integrated into shopping practices. Previously, OpenAI had experimented with an instant checkout option that did not meet expectations, prompting a pivot in strategy. In parallel, other companies, such as Instinct, have begun exploring new ways to recommend products to users, although some found these recommendations intrusive.

The new shopping capabilities utilize the recently introduced ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. According to OpenAI, this model enhances image generation—yielding improved natural lighting, richer textures, and quicker image production.

With the virtual try-on feature, ChatGPT users can now upload a selfie or full-body photograph to visualize how clothing or accessories would appear on them. Users can simply click a “try on” button when viewing shopping results. Furthermore, individuals can upload images of items they are interested in, such as screenshots from websites, for a virtual fitting experience.

The second feature, Favorites, allows users to save products they like to a Library within the ChatGPT app for future reference. Notably, these saved items are organized alongside the images generated during the try-on process.

OpenAI also highlighted that ChatGPT can assist users in other shopping-related endeavors. For example, users can describe a fashion style they wish to achieve, and the AI will search for products to complement that look. Additionally, users may upload images of outfits worn by celebrities and request links to the items available for purchase.

This exploration into fashion and online retail brings ChatGPT into competition with platforms like Pinterest and Google, which have historically been dominant sources for fashion inspiration and shopping.

As promising as these features seem, it remains uncertain if ChatGPT will become the preferred choice for online shopping, particularly as Google has already introduced similar virtual try-on capabilities.

Editor’s Take

This launch enhances the capabilities of AI in e-commerce, which could significantly improve user experience by making shopping more interactive and personalized. For businesses, these tools represent a new frontier for engaging customers and converting interest into sales. As competition grows, developers must keep refining AI offerings to differentiate their products in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
