RAF Fairford Declares Major Incident; Residents Evacuated Amid Arrests for Explosives

A significant security incident has emerged at RAF Fairford, with multiple arrests made and evacuations ordered for nearby residents. Authorities reported the apprehensions were related to potential violations of the Explosives Act.

In reaction to the unfolding situation, several U.S. military bases were placed on a heightened alert level. Residents in the vicinity of the airbase in Gloucestershire have been relocated to a local leisure center as a precautionary measure, amid concerns of a potential car bomb.

Authorities have established roadblocks and deployed armed officers around the area in recent days, with emergency services on standby. RAF Fairford hosts the U.S. Air Force’s 501st Combat Support Wing, previously mentioned in a warning issued by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in July regarding U.S. bombers operating from this base.

As of now, there is no indication that the current situation is linked to Iran. The declaration of a major incident coincided with the Labour Party’s conference in Liverpool, potentially prompting new discussions around U.K. defense strategies led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey next month.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force stated, “The 501st Combat Support Wing remains vigilant and will take necessary actions to ensure the safety of our personnel and their families.”

The Gloucestershire Police confirmed that several homes in the Whelford area were evacuated following the major incident declaration. The police reinforced that the threat is believed to be contained while the specialized explosive ordnance disposal team investigates several vehicles.

“We are working closely with our partners and implementing our predetermined response plans,” the police added, reassuring the community of their ongoing efforts to maintain safety.
