Apple Faces $5.7 Billion Damages Award in Haptic Patent Litigation

Taction, a company specializing in haptic technology, has secured a substantial legal victory against Apple, following a patent infringement suit filed in 2021. A federal jury in San Diego has mandated that Apple compensate Taction with over $5.7 billion in damages. The lawsuit involves U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117, which pertain to innovative vibration-based tactile transducer technology that enhances user interaction by allowing them to feel a device’s responses to their inputs.

The crux of Taction‘s argument was that the innovative technology behind Apple’s Taptic Engine, utilized in its Apple Watches and iPhones, was developed by them without appropriate licensing. The jury sided with Taction, determining that Apple had indeed infringed on two claims of one patent and one claim of another. Notably, the jury did not find evidence that Apple willfully infringed upon Taction‘s patents. Taction had accused Apple of reverse-engineering technologies derived from two Kannon gaming headsets.

In response to the jury’s decision, Apple has expressed its intention to appeal the ruling. The company has not provided further comments, but additional updates are expected as the situation unfolds.

Editor’s Take

This significant ruling not only underscores the importance of patent rights in the tech industry but also emphasizes the ongoing battle between innovative startups and established giants like Apple. The outcome could influence how companies approach technology development and licensing, potentially benefiting developers and users alike by fostering a more competitive landscape.
