Snorkel AI’s Valuation Reaches $3.5B Amid Surge in AI Training Data Demand

Snorkel AI, a rising startup specializing in the creation of training datasets and simulated environments for AI labs and businesses, has successfully completed a $350 million Series E funding round, elevating its valuation to $3.5 billion.

This latest investment, spearheaded by Insight Partners and S32, marks a significant leap in valuation for the seven-year-old company, nearly tripling its previous valuation of $1.3 billion recorded during a $100 million Series D round just 17 months prior. Notable existing investors such as Addition, Lightspeed, Greylock, GV, and Wells Fargo also participated in this funding round.

Initially focused on automating data labeling, Snorkel transitioned last year to deliver complete datasets to its clients, branding this new service as data-as-a-service. This hybrid model combines advanced software and AI-generated data with insights from human experts.

Currently, Snorkel boasts an impressive annualized revenue run-rate of $375 million, reflecting an astonishing 18-fold increase over the past year. This surge is primarily driven by the growing demand from AI labs for high-quality training data.

Other companies in the AI data sector are experiencing similar growth trajectories. Firms like Mercor have reported gross annualized revenues reaching $2 billion, while Handshake surpassed the $1 billion mark earlier this year, and Micro1 achieved a gross run-rate of $500 million. However, it’s crucial to note that due to their business models, these companies typically allocate about 60% to 70% of their revenue directly to the specialists performing the work, resulting in significantly lower net annual revenues.

Unlike its competitors, Snorkel measures its financial performance differently. The company sells reinforcement learning (RL) environments and comprehensive datasets, accounting for payments to human contributors within its cost of goods sold rather than in its headline annualized revenue statistics.

Founded commercially in 2019, Snorkel emerged from four years of foundational research led by co-founder and CEO Alex Ratner at a Stanford AI laboratory.

Editor’s Take

The substantial funding and valuation increase for Snorkel AI underscore the robust demand for high-quality AI training data. As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, providers like Snorkel play a critical role in shaping how developers and companies access and utilize data. This shift to comprehensive datasets may foster innovations across various industries, ultimately enhancing the capabilities of AI technologies.
