China Seeks Raptor 3 Engine; SpaceX Prepares for Major Starship Test
Chinese Space Company Unveils Engine Design Similar to SpaceX’s Raptor 3. Space Pioneer, a Chinese aerospace startup that has secured nearly $1 billion in funding, has recently introduced a new design for its Tianhuo-21 engine, which operates on methane and liquid oxygen. This design closely resembles SpaceX’s Raptor 3 engine, both in appearance and thrust capacity, which stands at 2,450 kN at sea level, mirroring that of the Raptor 3.
Challenges in Replication … Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, addressed the challenges associated with replicating the Raptor 3 engine. He advised against new companies attempting to create an exact replica, emphasizing that despite its outward simplicity necessary for extreme heat resistance, the internal structure features complex geometries that require highly specialized 3D metal printing techniques.
Successful Launch of the Roman Space Telescope. NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is en route to its observation location, following a launch that has set it on a trajectory so precise that engineers predict it will utilize fuel for double its original lifespan. Initially designed for a minimum operational period of five years, this $4.3 billion observatory may now maintain its missions for up to 22 years, according to reports from Ars Technica.
A Conservative Fuel Estimate … Jamie Dunn, director at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, attributed the telescope’s extended fuel efficiency to meticulous planning by the orbital dynamics team and flawless execution during its recent launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The Roman telescope took flight on August 30 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, kicking off a mission aimed at enhancing our understanding of the Universe.
Blue Origin Expands Research on Rocket Propulsion. Blue Origin has announced an expanded partnership with the Rocket and Space Propulsion Division of the Air Force Research Laboratory, focusing on advancing rocket propulsion technologies. Nicholas Robertson, senior vice president of engines at Blue Origin, emphasized that this collaboration will help ground their engineering models in real governmental research.
Developing Lunar Lander Engines … The release from Blue Origin noted that the Air Force lab has made significant strides in oxygen-rich and full-flow staged combustion technologies. Additionally, the company plans to continue its work on the BE-7 lunar lander engine in conjunction with the Air Force at their High Altitude Rocket Test Facility at Edwards Air Force Base.
