Police: 76-Year-Old West Virginia Woman Left Blind Husband on Toilet for 19 Hours

A 75-year-old woman from West Virginia has been charged with neglect after allegedly abandoning her legally blind husband on the toilet for over 19 hours, leading to his death. Margaret Louise Rog, a resident of Morgantown, is accused of leaving her 76-year-old husband, identified only as MSR, without food, water, or medication.

The distressing incident occurred on August 20 when Rog’s husband went to the bathroom. Court documents indicate he was unable to move and was left to suffer alone while Rog chose to go to bed. He eventually passed out and was found the following morning by a speech therapist during a scheduled visit, resulting in an emergency call to 911.

Upon being admitted to the hospital on August 21, medical staff discovered that he exhibited numerous health issues, including rhabdomyolysis, sepsis, and respiratory failure, among others. Investigations revealed that his condition raised suspicions of abuse and neglect.

According to police interviews, Rog reportedly acknowledged knowing her husband was in distress but opted not to assist him. Instead, she allegedly left him unattended while he struggled in agony.

Following the investigation, Rog was arrested and charged with the abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult. She has since posted a $75,000 bond and is set to appear in court on September 25. Investigators noted that she had made several admissions during questioning that suggested her awareness of his dire need for help without taking any action.

MSR, who had multiple chronic conditions including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, was deemed legally incapacitated and relied heavily on Rog for support. His inability to stand unassisted ultimately led to the tragic series of events that unfolded.

The community has reacted with shock to this deeply troubling case, which highlights serious concerns regarding elder care and the responsibilities of caregivers.

Editor’s Take

This development underscores significant issues surrounding elder care and neglect. With caregivers often overwhelmed, this incident raises awareness about the need for better support and resources for vulnerable adults. It also prompts a broader discussion about societal responsibilities towards those unable to care for themselves.
