Crusoe Secures $3.9B Investment for Large Data Centers and Modular AI Facilities

Crusoe Raises $3.9 Billion in Series F Funding, Valuation Reaches $30.9 Billion

On Thursday, data center developer Crusoe announced a significant milestone, securing $3.9 billion in a Series F funding round, propelling its valuation to an impressive $30.9 billion. The funding was co-led by Atreides Management, Mubadala Capital, and Valor Equity Partners, with participation from notable investors such as Founders Fund, GIC, Nvidia, and Qatar Investment Authority (QIA). Additional contributors included Radical Ventures and TPG.

In conjunction with this funding announcement, Crusoe introduced three new members to its board of directors: Thomas Seifert, CFO of Cloudflare; Bill Stein, partner and CIO at Primary Digital Infrastructure; and JB Straubel, founder and CEO of Redwood Materials and a board member of Tesla. Notably, Straubel has a history with Crusoe, having personally invested in the company in 2021, with Crusoe becoming the first customer for Redwood’s energy storage solutions thereafter.

The influx of capital is set to support ongoing data center initiatives, including a substantial facility in Abilene, Texas, utilized by OpenAI. Crusoe is also focused on developing smaller, mobile AI factories, which can be easily transported and rapidly connected to significant power sources across various locations.

By building these modular data centers, referred to as Spark, within their own manufacturing facilities, Crusoe can efficiently deploy computing capacity without relying on extensive construction resources. These smaller centers provide a strategic advantage, allowing the company to mitigate community opposition commonly associated with large data center complexes.

In a statement, Crusoe co-founder and CEO expressed a strong belief that the advent of AI will herald a new era of abundance. He emphasized the importance of “controlling the infrastructure from electrons to tokens,” thanking investors who share this vision.

Crusoe has established a robust business model, generating revenue by leasing data center space to clients who supply their own GPUs, renting out its proprietary GPUs, and selling computational power for running AI models, known as inference.

This diversified approach has positioned Crusoe as one of the leading companies in AI infrastructure. Recently, the firm secured a remarkable $13 billion, five-year cloud contract with quantitative trading firm Jane Street for GPUs and AI infrastructure, as reported by Bloomberg.

Additionally, Crusoe has engaged with investment banking giants like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to explore a potential IPO in the near future, indicating strong growth prospects.

This recent fundraising comes ten months after Crusoe raised $1.38 billion at a valuation of $10 billion in October of last year. Originally founded in 2018 to power crypto mining operations using flared natural gas, the company has since transitioned to cater to the burgeoning demand for AI computing power, counting major players like Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle among its clients.

Editor’s Take

This substantial funding round underscores the increasing demand for AI infrastructure as businesses pivot towards AI solutions. Crusoe’s ability to combine large-scale data centers with modular, mobile units positions it well during this technological evolution. For stakeholders, this development could indicate a future where AI capabilities are more accessible, facilitating innovation across various industries.
