Watchdog Bans AI App Ads for Encouraging the Objectification of Women
The UK’s advertising regulatory body has taken action against several ads that violate local standards, utilizing its AI-driven “Active Ad Monitoring System” to identify potentially harmful content. This innovative system actively scans advertisements to ensure compliance with UK regulations.
Among the five ads banned, the regulator noted that they portrayed women in a disrespectful manner, likely to provoke significant public offense. One particular advertisement for an AI companion generator by Animcha Ltd was criticized for presenting an individual under the age of 18 in a sexualized context.
The controversial ad featured a synthetic female character that could be “customised” and controlled by users, blending a childlike appearance with sexualized imagery and props. Such representations raise ethical concerns regarding the exploitation of imagery in AI-generated content.
Additionally, two advertisements for an AI portrait generation tool known as Nexaipic encouraged users to “upload your crush and let AI create what you imagine,” which included sexually explicit videos. These ads have sparked debates around consent and the misuse of personal images in the realm of artificial intelligence.
Another advertisement, related to an AI image-to-video app referred to as KH31 DD22, depicted the transformation of a clothed woman into a topless figure, indicating the potential for the app to generate content that objectifies women.
The regulatory body expressed concerns that further ads from the image generation tool Rusto AI promoted the digital alteration of women’s images to produce sexually explicit material, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and objectification.
Finally, an ad for the AI video generation application PictoPop also drew attention for its use of sexualized imagery, showcasing portrayals of women in submissive postures. In its investigation, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) revealed that none of the creators of these applications responded to their inquiries.
Editor’s Take
This development highlights the growing concern over ethics and accountability in AI-generated content. The actions taken by the ASA demonstrate a proactive approach to safeguarding societal norms and values. As technology advances, it is vital for businesses and developers to prioritize ethical standards to foster trust among users and prevent misuse of innovative tools.
