Thai Monk Admits Two-Year Affair, Police Uncover £5M in Cash and Jewelry

Scandal Erupts as Thai Monk Caught in Compromising Situation

A monk from Thailand has confessed to a romantic involvement lasting two years after being discovered engaging in sexual activity within the confines of his temple. This revelation follows a police investigation that unveiled assets, including cash, jewelry, and gold, totaling an estimated £5 million.

Phra Wachirayan Wi, the 66-year-old abbot of the historic Wat Phutthaisawan temple located in Ayutthaya, was filmed in a compromising situation last week, a video that garnered significant attention across Thai media. The abbot was apprehended on charges including embezzlement and money laundering, alongside a 47-year-old woman who was present during the incident.

The woman is alleged to have assisted in concealing and converting the funds intended for the temple’s use. During his questioning, the monk admitted to a romantic relationship with her that dates back two years.

Initially, authorities reported discovering 92 million baht (approximately £2.1 million), but this figure has since increased to 215 million baht (around £4.8 million). In addition to the cash haul, law enforcement officials seized various assets, such as gold items, gemstones, and land deeds.

This incident adds to a string of controversies involving religious figures in Thailand, where public outrage has previously erupted over misconduct in the clergy. Last year saw a significant scandal that involved extortion by senior monks, leading to demands for stricter oversight of temple finances.

The investigation into Phra Wachirayan began in mid-July after police received an anonymous tip-off regarding alleged financial misconduct. According to Pattanasak Bupphasuwan, the lead investigator, the inquiry found that funds linked to donations for the temple had not been deposited into its accounts. Specifically, 89 million baht was reportedly designated for renovations, with another 2.8 million baht meant for Buddhist amulets and sacred objects.

Pattanasak stated: “But the money from both streams did not enter the temple’s account—not a single baht.” The police emphasized their commitment to expanding the investigation to restore trust in Buddhism among the public.

Wat Phutthaisawan is a well-known royal monastery that attracts numerous followers, including government officials, military personnel, and business leaders. The abbot, also referred to as Luang Pho Atichot, was renowned for crafting amulets that held significant cultural value; even Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, was reported to have worn one of his creations.

Following his arrest, the abbot was promptly defrocked and has not yet made any public statements regarding the allegations. This scandal comes on the heels of another shocking case involving a woman accused of blackmailing multiple monks, orchestrating an extortion scheme that extracted nearly $12 million from temple funds.

In a related incident last year, another prominent monk, Luang Phor Alongkot, famous for his humanitarian work with people living with HIV/AIDS, was arrested for allegedly misappropriating donations intended for his projects. He denied any wrongdoing.

Editor’s Take

This scandal underscores the pervasive issues of transparency and accountability in religious institutions, particularly in countries where faith plays a central role in society. The situation encourages a critical examination of how donations are managed within such establishments. For technology and AI sectors, this highlights the importance of ethical governance as they expand into various domains.
