London has officially entered the era of autonomous transportation, as Uber has launched the UK’s first robotaxi service. This groundbreaking initiative allows residents to summon self-driving minicabs, marking a significant step in the evolution of urban mobility.
Initially, the service will operate with a fleet of just 15 autonomous vehicles. Each vehicle is required to have a human safety driver present to take control in the event of any unforeseen issues.
A survey conducted by Uber revealed that over 100,000 customers in London expressed interest in using autonomous taxis. This enthusiasm comes despite previous concerns about malfunctions reported with driverless vehicles in U.S. cities.
As the first UK journalist to experience a ride, I found the journey largely seamless, although there was one instance where the safety driver needed to intervene.
For now, fares for rides in these robotaxis will align with those of traditional services like UberX, Uber Electric, and Uber Comfort, with upfront pricing displayed in the app. However, self-driving options will only be available after a journey has been booked and if a vehicle is in proximity.
According to Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, the company’s plan is to gradually expand this fleet over the coming years.
Maredia emphasized, “We always want consumers to be able to request either a human or an autonomous ride, and we expect human drivers to remain a part of Uber London for the foreseeable future as the market evolves.”
The fleet consists of Ford Mustang electric vehicles outfitted with technology from UK-based Wayve. This system utilizes AI to assess and respond to real-time data collected by sensors mounted on the vehicles.
Unlike conventional systems that rely on pre-programmed routes, these vehicles determine their actions spontaneously based on the surrounding environment.
Competing companies, such as Waymo and Baidu, are also eyeing opportunities to launch similar services in the UK, intensifying the race in autonomous mobility.
Alex Kendall, CEO of Wayve, characterized the advancement of this technology as “the space race for our generation,” while acknowledging the substantial challenges that remain in perfecting autonomous driving.
He stated, “What we’ve done over time is pioneer a completely new approach to autonomous driving, enabling this technology to thrive in a bustling and complex environment like London while also preparing for global scalability.”
